I’m going to stir the shit now I’ve started…
What if they held their deposits in 1979, what would that have meant for public order and the general mood in the country. It’s mad how they did worse in this election in EVERY SINGLE SEAT despite putting up 3 times as many candidates. Undoubtedly it was Maggie’s ‘alien cultures’ interview that did it.

It's a bit of a stretch of the imagination to think that the NF might have got more than 12.5% of the votes in each of the constituencies in which they stood in 1979. In October 1974 the NF candidates mostly got about 2% or 3%, and none more than 9.4%. Perhaps you mean that they hypothetically got an average of 12.5% rather than a minimum. Anyway, race relations would have been worse in the early 1980s than it was, there would have been more riots and counter-riots and provocative counter-demonstrations. There might have been a slightly lower level of immigration for a few years, but only slight. This is because the level of immigration and emigration, and employment of ethnic minorities, is determined by economic forces and demand.

I remember the Wycombe constituency - they got 3.50% and 4.12% . I was involved with the anti-racist campaign, in 1976-78. Watch the C4 Defiance - worth watching. I don't think that's so mad at all. On the contrary, it's perfectly understandable. Putting up 3 times as many candidates when IIRC their numbers of activists had fallen meant fewer people to canvass and a significant dilution of resources. They'd have done better in many constituencies (though still falling short of the 12.5% deposit) by targeting areas of relative strength.
