So many ways this might have (failed to) happen. Contrary to muscle memory she did not do so because he hated miners, although TBF that would be a decent reason. She did it because they were/appeared to be economically obsolete. So, if there had been no gas under the North sea or the Arabs and Israelies had opted for a best of five or if she had lost the Falklands to the Argies or Michael Foot had been vaguely plausible or Roy Jenkins had been caught with a dead girl or live boy or if the coal seams were four feet thicker and forty feet nearer the surface, the mines would not have been closed.
Which means that when Blair, Smith, Gould, Hattersley, Prescott or Brown (it would not be Harman, she is a woman) upon came to power upon Foots retirement and Climate Change was Invented, the Labour Government would have had to close the coal mines.

Thatcher gets a lot of stick, the Labour government closed more coal mines than Thatcher, and the free school milk IIRC was abolished for over 7’s by the Labour Party as well.

The difference is that Labour mostly closed them in a phased fashion with the agreement of the NUM (though there was the odd exception)
