Agencies of the UK government had some very senior peopel within the IRA among their informers. The two best known are Denis Donaldson and Freddie Scappatichi.
The more I read about Scappatichi the more I think he was a psychopathic serial killer living his best possible life, in no way under the control of his UK paymasters. It has become fairly normal since the Good Friday Agreement for formerly senior IRA figures to morph into éminence grise and when a name was needed to become an abstenionist MP up they pop.
It could perhaps have happened to Donaldson but Scappaticchi would be way more fun, because he was such a loose cannon. He might have decided that he wanted to take the salary and even turn up and speak, especially if six months into his term he was out as a tout.
He would have made a better MP than Francie Molloy
