With Sinn Fein pulling out of four constituencies including Belfast South I imagine they were hoping to pressure the SDLP to do similar, in particular here when they didn’t stand last time to help unseat Nigel Dodds in what was described as an anti-Brexit move rather than a nationalist pact However Colum Eastwood is saying that they will be standing in all 18 seats: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22vwqvyy8o.amp

TUV are running so this will more than likely be a SF hold.

Finucane is impressive and will retain. Will also cannibalise SDLP vote. How will McAllister poll as a sitting MLA?

The SDLP's ridiculously short-term political decision to not stand a candidate in 2019, led to much of the SDLP vote going to Nuala McAllister, and subsequently lost Nicola Mallon, one of the most impressive politicians in Stormont and the deputy leader, her seat at the 2022 Stormont elections and her to NI politics. I expect John Finucane to win here fairly easily due to the TUV standing a candidate.

Agree with you that Nichola Mallon was very impressive, however, in recent years SDLP have had major strife in Belfast area losing a number of former Mayors even from the party, possibly over social issues like abortion. This has fractured their vote support in the Belfast area where they have always been residually weak even from the time of their foundation. Since SF started contesting they have been always weaker in Belfast than them, an uncomfortable fact as there has been more working-class territory to fight over and they were out-organised. Various political and history books back up that analysis also. What really hurt Mallon in the end was the fact that her local Councillor, McCusker in Oldpark got elected as an Independent with the highest vote in all of NI. Another fall-out with the SDLP leadership there in a key DEA.

I’m a bit surprised Jim Allister ended up standing a candidate here considering it’s a Sinn Fein seat, with the UUP not standing and the SDLP contesting this time the DUP would have had a decent shot at winning as the single unionist candidate (even if still not the favourites)
