Underperformance was worst by far in Cardiff and Swansea; the one Valleys seat that looks to be in the same category is actually yet another example of the sainted Rallings and Thrasher making an obvious error in their notional calculations as you can see by checking Bridgend next door. Though until I remembered that I did wonder if Chris Bryant had done something to personally offend people in Maesteg.

With the strong performance by Reform in his seat, maybe a fair few locals didn't appreciate Bryant's comments about Farage.

Labour underperformed in Wales this time, and at least some of the reasons for that might not still apply in 2028/29. Which might easily, to a degree, counteract the surely improved Tory performance (though to what extent, is totally unknowable) that we can expect then. The votes came where they were needed though. That is what mattered for the election. We were also considered competitive in the two Plaid gains and BR+CT, despite losing. Then it is only really two seats where Labour aren't competitive at all. Not bad.
There are worries though. Vote shares were definitely poor. Lots of worries for the Senedd election as well. Plaid would almost certainly gain Cardiff West under the old FPTP system on last Thursday's numbers. And Reform's vote share in Llanelli - wow. But Labour have had to fight hard to win there before, and can again.

Another one of those funny seats that has elected MPs from three different parties in three consecutive elections.

Another one of those funny seats that has elected MPs from three different parties in three consecutive elections. It has a curious history going back decades as noted above. Fond of incumbents but not their replacements.

As perhaps previously noted, Llinos Medi is not the first MP to be called Llinos. Llin Golding (Newcastle-under-Lyme, Lab, 1986-2001), now Baroness Golding, also has the full forename Llinos. She is the daughter of Ness Edwards (Caerphilly, Lab, 1939-1969) and spoke movingly in the House about his experiences liberating Bergen-Belsen at the end of WWII.

Any idea why the Conservative vote held up so respectably here? It wasn't as if they did well in Wales.

Anglesey has had only seven MPs, from four parties, since 1935 including the incumbent. Megan Lloyd George served for 22 years (1929-51) and Cledwyn Hughes 28 years (1951-79). It is much the same in other island constituencies such the Western Isles with five MPs since 1935 and even more so with Orkney and Shetland with four since 1935.

Megan Lloyd George was first elected in 1929 but you are right about the 22 years.

I'd argue that the Conservative vote held up reasonably well in some Welsh constituencies (mid and south Pembrokeshire, Clwyd north, vale of Glamorgan) whilst falling back horrendously in the labour held seats

Any idea why the Conservative vote held up so respectably here? It wasn't as if they did well in Wales. I had the impression Virginia Crosbie was an assiduous local MP, always putting her frequent social media constituency updates in both English and Welsh, for example.
