The SNP will defend a 2,207 (4%) vote notional majority here. Iain Whyte is the SNP candidate, he has previously worked in the office of former MSP Paul Wheelhouse and unsuccessfully stood for the SNP in Musselburgh at the 2022 local elections. The previous SNP candidate, Kenny MacAskill, has since defected to Alba, and is standing for re-election.
Labour have nominated Douglas Alexander, 1997-2015 MP for Paisley South who served in various positions in the Blair/Brown cabinet and Milliband shadow cabinet, and he starts as a heavy favourite.
The tories weren't far behind Labour in 3rd last time, but don't appear to have nominated a candidate yet.

Assuming that is the case it’ll be interesting to see if Douglas goes straight into a government role (or shadow frontbench if Labour don’t win the election somehow)
He became very senior previously as we all know but on the other hand will now be the best part of 10 years out of parliament

They haven’t seriously renamed this Lothian East have they?! On the principle that Scottish Parliament constituencies must have a different name from UK Parliament ones.

Good news for Labour. I expect Alexander to take this pretty comfortably.

That looks remarkably like a chicken run?

Not really, a chicken run is to a seat you think you can win, this is a swap for one he can't win for another one he can't win.

Presumably MacAskill wants to attempt to stand in a seat he can actually win, albeit only if they get the pact with the SNP. If they don’t then it doesn’t matter.

Good news for Labour. I expect Alexander to take this pretty comfortably. It's kind of irrelevant for Labour. I would expect them to take this comfortably whoever the Alba candidate was. Or indeed whoever the SNP or Conservative candidates are... if anything McAskill may have taken more SNP votes and marginally increased the Labour majority.

Kerevan has had a ‘varied’ political journey. He was a member of the IMG from 1972-82. In 1976, he attempted to join the new Scottish Labour Party of Jim Sillars as a Trot infiltrator. That didn’t last long.
Eventually he joined the Labour Party. He had been a lecturer at Napier Polytechnic/University and was a regular writer on the Scotsman. At that stage he was generally producing sensible copy.
It didn’t last and he defected to the SNP in 1996 where he lasted until 2021 before moving to Alba. He did have a brief spell as MP for East Lothian from 2015-17.
I assume that this will be the end of the line for Kerevan?
