The Greens seem to have got themselves into a bit of a mess here, with Alison Teal still apparently in suspension limbo, which must be a bit frustrating in one of their more promising seats.

"The Sheffield Green Party should have a new candidate for the Sheffield Central constituency by this weekend after the party reran its selection process. Current candidate Alison Teal has been suspended for the last 19 months after she expressed “gender critical” views said by some to be at odds with Green Party policy. At a fresh hustings on Wednesday evening, local party members heard arguments that Teal should be reinstated as candidate, but these were ultimately rejected. Members now have a choice between former councillor Rob Murphy, current councillor Angela Argenzio, Colin McCulloch and Ammar Aldaker, with the result due on Saturday. Members could also vote to reject the new process and reopen nominations. However, if that were to happen the party would find itself in a huge dilemma with no obvious solution."

Without commenting on the rights and wrongs of Alison Teal’s views, I’m afraid that this affair suggests that it’s not only the Labour Party who can get themselves in a mess with ridiculously slow disciplinary procedures and selection shenanigans. And it ought tobe one of their most promising seats.

Any sensible political party should be able to accommodate a range of views on a peripheral issue like this. Once they cease to do so, they are either dissolving into factionalism and authoritarianism, or redefining a peripheral issue as a non-negotiable core value.

It is bizarre that a Green Party should consider issues relating to gender fluidity as a core value.

I have never met Alison Teal, but am aware of all the work she did on the Sheffield trees campaign.

Alison Teal has been put on 'No Fault Suspension' for the last 19 months. Many other long-serving party members have had similar action taken against them, some for longer than this. In effect it is the same as being expelled, as they are not able to take part in any Green Party action or meetings, and are just left in limbo. My understanding (which is obviously not first hand) is that she has not been given any opportunity in the last 19 months to defend her position, and it appears that there has been no attempt by those in the national party whose role it is to make any attempt to discuss her suspension with her. I also understand that Wednesday's meeting was set up on a date when it was known that many of her supporters would not be able to attend.

I will comment further on No Fault Suspensions on a more appropriate thread.

From what I've heard about the emergency selection meeting, her supporters were pretty much doing a "stop the steal" thing. Encouraging people to vote Re-Open Nominations. Insisting that the whole thing was invalid. And so on.

They've definitely absorbed all the loons who had previously attached themselves to Labour in Sheffield.

Good long term for Labour and bad for the Greens.
