This was a very strange result indeed. There must have been an extremely fortuitous confluence of Tory favouring factors here : popular incumbent, unpopular Labour candidate, Gaza related fracturing of the Muslim vote and differential turnout. Ilkley isn't even the Tory stronghold it once was .

I'm not convinced that John Grogan was all that personally (as opposed to politically) unpopular, after all he won quite well in 2017. But otherwise, yes, it was a perfect storm for Labour. It's the first time since 1923 that Labour has formed a government without winning here.
It has only just come to my attention that the seat was won for the Tories in 1931 by George Harvie-Watt, who was MP for my constituency until just before I was born.

Moore must have done better than most Tories as far as Muslim voters were concerned, and indeed recent local results suggest this is not implausible.
