The LD candidate, Parmjit Singh Gill, was the victor of the 2004 Leicester South by-election.

He thus joins a select band of former MPs who unsuccessfully sought to return to the House after a period of absence . Not sure if any of them are Conservatives. Probably the most unexpected loser amongst them is John Grogan in Keighley and Ilkley

Plus a Lib Dem who was formerly a Conservative MP, Andrew Pelling (stood in Croydon East; MP for Croydon Central 2005-10)

If he'd stayed in the Tories, he could have held the Croydon Central seat up to 2017. He could then have got a safe seat in 2019 and possibly still be in Parliament? What is he playing at? Is he somewhat narcissistic or what?

According to Wikipedia, he was suspended from the Tories in 2007 for assaulting his wife.

His principles are elastic and his ego pretty towering.

He could then have got a safe seat in 2019 and possibly still be in Parliament? What is he playing at? Is he somewhat narcissistic or what? When he was arrested on suspicion of assault (no charges were brought, and he has since reconciled with his ex-wife), there were other issues of disagreement between Andrew Pelling and the other prominent local Conservatives in Croydon, in addition to the bad publicity from the arrest. For that reason, he agreed not to stand for re-election in 2010. By the time the 2010 election came, he was sufficiently detached and estranged from the Conservative Party that he didn’t want to stand as a Conservative anyway. He changed his mind about not standing, and decided to stand as an Independent in 2010. He then quickly drifted towards the Labour Party, until he fell out with them because of the failings of Croydon’s Labour council. Then he joined the Lib Dems (there were discussions with some local Conservatives but it was mutually agreed that he wouldn’t be acceptable to Conservative members if he rejoined). In between those, he stood as an Independent candidate in the Mayoral election and in a local council by-election So, in answer to your question, he is indeed narcissistic or what. He is not just narcissistic or what; he is narcissistic and what, with knobs on.
