Tories really haven't had much luck with their MPs here have they? I heard the MP who lost in '05 wasn't great either.

no, that's part of the reason he lost. John Taylor's predecessor, Percy Grieve (father of Dominic), was notoriously constituency-neglectful too.

The tories in Solihull are awful generally, and have been since time began. Unfortunately, a large section of the populace is either (a) selfish or (b) stupid. So they usually get in.

My word what insightful comments you've made so far. I can hardly wait to see the next ones.

My cousin who lives in Knowle (not in this constituency but obvious in the borough) thinks very highly of the Conservative group on Solihull council and thinks they have run the borough in a quiet and efficient manner. Given their election results over the last 15 years or so have been consistently solid, much better than in the 1990s and 2000s, it certainly seems to suggest that they are not particularly bad.

I’ve heard similar comments from people in Solihull - and I very much liked the previous leader, Bob Sleigh (no honesty that was his name), who I met a couple of times.

I'm talking about the MPs they've had, not Councillors. And I suspect if you live in Kingshurst, it is a lot different to Knowle. 12 year gap in life expectancy.

Well perhaps you should say what you mean. Your comment "The tories in Solihull are awful generally" can not reasonably be interpreted as referring only to MPs. And yes, obviously 1960s Birmingham overspill estates are very different to highly affluent commuter villages. The factors affecting life expectancy are many but it would hardly be fair to blame the Solihull Conservatives for a pattern that exists throughout the land.

I used to work in Solihull until recently and encountered similar positivity from colleagues there.

I agree I think his impact on the Tory vote will be minimal . The effect on his bank balance of standing and losing will of course be substantial. He’ll be about £20,000 better off than simply walking away. I suspect that's more of a factor for Bridgen in NW Leics than it is for Knight here. Had Knight been mercenary, he would have been more cautious in his handling of certain matters while chairing the DCMS Committee, would have avoided confrontation with Sunak's whips, and would very probably still be a Tory candidate.

Knight's only standing for the winding up allowance and is going to have minimum impact on this race which I expect the Tories to hold because there isn't a clear opposition.
Solihull is OK and has been run competently by the council, but the MP's have never exactly been of the best.

How many people can there be in the Conservative Party called Neil Shastri-Hurst?

Bob Sleigh, one time leader of the council, told me of the time he walked into a council meeting and the whole room snapped round and stared at him like they were seeing a ghost. The local paper that morning had an obituary of Bob Sleigh. It turns out there were two Bob Sleighs in Solihull.
