Plum a seat as they come for someone in favour.

The new Labour candidate is Col Alistair Carns OBE MC, a Royal Marines veteran.

Tonight I canvassed with our new candidate for Selly Oak. He really is a military man, extremely enthusiastic, I think he will be a good MP. He speaks with a strong Scottish accent - is that some sort of secret requirement for Selly Oak MPs!

So what? It's a minor party candidate in a university constituency. Nice young one loses their deposit. Or maybe not given the makeup of the electorate. It's a pretty ballsy thing to do, and I'd warmly encourage it.

As opposed to 5Pillars, who are Taliban supporters. I simply attached that tweet so that people could see the whole video and have the whole context as the article didn’t attach the footage

I obviously would not have supported the independent candidate in Selly Oak. Despite that, it is notable that McCabe makes a comment, agreeing with the resident, in the video that the situation in Gaza/Israel ‘is complicated’ but also refers to the independent as a Hamas supporter which is a fairly simplistic approach that ignores the complexity and is why so little progress is made. Much to the detriment of the Palestinian and Israeli people.

One of the most surprising results of the general election for me is ReformUK coming within 103 votes of second place in this constituency, although maybe the boundary changes have altered the demographics of the seat in ways I hadn't taken on board.

The changes weren't that great, but it isn't all students and progressives. Much of the seat to the east of the Birmingham-Kings Norton railway line is Reform favourable except for the bits of Kings Heath that are in that side of the seat.
