What I particularly dislike is political parties butchering constituency names so that they include more areas than are in the official title. So for example we have the Richmond Park & North Kingston Conservative Association, but the whole point of our concise constituency name is that both Richmond & northern Kingston immediately abut the park, which lies at the centre of, and is a unifying feature of, the constituency. Sometimes an and is OK, sometimes less so. Some of the names have been there for ever & a day, e.g. Folkestone & Hythe.

Those people from the marginally smaller town who get annoyed about it need to get a life. To play devil's advocate couldn't the same be applied to people who get bothered by the inclusion of those names? I agree that Honiton probably would've been fine but I don't find myself having any reaction to names like this.

But I do think shorter names are more elegant.

I keep having to remind our lot that the seat next door is Thirsk & Malton, not Thirsk, Malton & Filey which I keep hearing people tell people. Eg "It's officially Thirsk, Malton and Filey, tell them that when you phone for a postal vote" etc.

Good choice of an example, since the constituency name proved so all-pervasive that Shepway Council area renamed itself to Folkestone and Hythe Council just a few years ago.
