Ridiculous "and". At least Budleigh Salterton would have been funny.

Ridiculous "and". At least Budleigh Salterton would have been funny. Budleigh Salterton is in Exeter East and Exmouth. I'd have gone for either "Honiton" or "East Devon" for this seat.

When was the last time Sidmouth had a non-Conservative MP? It must be a while. It feels like one of the most typically Conservative places imaginable. Honiton less so.

That's correct. It was in South Devon at the time, which was lost by John Russell (later to be PM) in what was a major by-election shock at the time. It was a ministerial by-election as Russell had just become Home Secretary, and he then had to scuttle off to Stroud, where a safer seat was made available. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he later tried to abolish ministerial by-elections (unsuccessfully - they continued until the 1920s).

Ridiculous "and". At least Budleigh Salterton would have been funny. Sidmouth is now large enough that it could not have been ignored in the constituency name, unlike with the old Honiton seat.

If Foord does win here he will owe an immense debt of gratitude to Claire Wright. She has done an immense amount of heavy lifting in this constituency.

If Foord does win here he will owe an immense debt of gratitude to Claire Wright. She has done an immense amount of heavy lifting in this constituency. She's actively involved in the Lib Dem campaigns both here and in Exmouth & Exeter East. Beyond endorsing them she's written letters to her supporters urging them to support the Lib Dem candidates and she's been out on the doorstep with them.

My normally Tory voting Uncle and Aunt live in this constituency and they really like Richard Foord, although they donβt like Claire Wright - they call her Claire Wrong- and her endorsement has certainly made them less likely to vote for him.

... they donβt like Claire Wright - they call her Claire Wrong... In her book, Diary of an MP's Wife, Sasha Swire (Wife of Hugo) she is frequently referred to by the name "Claire Wrong" intriguing that the name has stuck.

It's weird the way the dots over her i's appear to have gone walkabout and end up two or three letters to the right of where they should be.

I don't really like the growth of the "and" in constituency names out of fear of offending the proud people of town X. Just name it based on broad geography (e.g. East Devon) or name it after the biggest town. Those people from the marginally smaller town who get annoyed about it need to get a life.
