Young Labour had a big and well-attended campaign day in Gloucester (I didn't go). Labour have had some decent GE results here despite the appalling local results of recent years, this will definitely be an interesting one to watch on election night

Well the Labour local election results were significantly less bad this year, even if still sub-optimal.
If quite a lot of the local LibDem vote here breaks Labour at a GE, then this is definitely in play.

If quite a lot of the local LibDem vote here breaks Labour at a GE, then this is definitely in play. When you consider the national picture Labour's local results this year were as abysmal as ever. There is, however, little doubt that this will be a Labour gain, probably with a large majority, at this GE.

I'm not so confident to be honest. I suspect the Tory vote will prove quite sticky

It is true that Labour has occasionally won a general election without Gloucester, but postwar only in the two 1974 elections. Boundaries have sometimes been important to the destiny in this seat. The constituency has shown a remarkably consistent tendency for Labour to do much worse in municipal than parliamentary elections (even in 1995 IIRC Labour didn't do particularly amazingly here) and I'm going with a Lab gain without a lot of hesitation in the circumstances.

Labour gain, though in true Glos tradition not by much. Even they could hardly fail to win this time.

Nevertheless, they failed to pick up some (though not many) more winnable seats than Gloucester. Even with a large opinion poll lead this was never going to be totally straightforward, so this wasn't a terrible result by any means, even though it wasn't brilliant either. Since WWII only in the 2 1974 elections have Labour won nationally & lost here.

Has this seat stayed a marginal for about the longest of all time? It's never had a majority of over 12k.

Has this seat stayed a marginal for about the longest of all time? It's never had a majority of over 12k. The majority was 19.1% in 2019. Not what I'd usually consider a marginal. Ynys Mon/Anglesey last had a majority that size in 1966, and Gloucester has had even bigger ones in that time.

Certainly demonstrates what can be done, hard though losing certainly is.
