Not sure that's going to be so. Even in 2001 the Labour Party was targeting some seats for gains - and gained two of them.

Other targets included Boston and Skegness, and I think South West Bedfordshire. I think Chipping Barnet was on the list as well, because Sir Sydney Chapman was thought to have a large personal vote.

yes you're correct. I used to know the defeated candidate in 2001 (he also stood & lost in Spelthorne in 1987).

I would imagine that the seats we lost to Gaza independents will be targeted, along with others that we expected to win but where we fell short for similar reasons (eg Keighley & Ilkley and Chingford & Woodford Green). On the flip side, there are probably seats we won on July 4 that will not formally be targets, unless we have done very well indeed in office.
