Update on the condition of Craig Mackinlay, who I think will be contesting this seat. It was known he had contracted sepsis but it seems it has had serious consequences. He has had a proxy vote in Parliament since 14 November 2023.

Just watched the incredibly moving GB News documentary. Poor chap, what he's been through is unreal but he's come out fighting strong.

Just seen it on the News. Remarkable. Not easy for him to hold his seat, but, whilst not being a fan of his politics, if he does, I won't be devastated.

Seeing the photos from his hospital bed really puts things into perspective, his arms looked unreal, almost "too" blackened to be real. What a story, to take everything with such bravery and tough spirit. Remarkable indeed.

You have to admire his mental strength, suddenly losing all 4 of your limbs, surviving against the odds, not giving up on life, and garnering the mental strength to come back with your head up high

I have very little sympathy for Mr McKinlay's political views, but I greatly admire his bravery in his fight for survival and recovery, and the stoic way he has adapted to this horrendous illness and its consequences. His candidacy would very likely have saved this seat for the Conservatives; without him I find it hard to look beyond a Labour gain. I wish him well for the future.

He could come back as a Tory MP, or go to the Lords?

Labour will be absolutely delighted with this news, though of course they cannot express this publicly. It's the right decision from McKinlay, the job would be nigh on impossible for him to do effectively and I'd imagine he just wants to spend time with his family.

Interesting that Harrison was shortlisted given complaints about CCHQ-dominated selections.

Interesting that Harrison was shortlisted given complaints about CCHQ-dominated selections. How depressing, to lose a safe seat in a byelection and, now, to look likely to lose a safe seat in a General Election. I suspect her determination will see her in the Commons eventually.

This is not a safe seat

Interesting that Harrison was shortlisted given complaints about CCHQ-dominated selections. That party now seems to have some sort of urgent death wish.

My recollection may be fáulty, but I seem to remember she did not exactly put the heather on fire in that campaign. You really wonder about the other candidates at that selection.
