But sea levels are rising at 3.5mm a year, so it will be a while before it's a real threat. And there isn't really any way to stop it rising, as even if greenhouse gases were stabilized tomorrow (an obvious impossibility) the ice will continue to melt. So Mr Ivinson will not be able to save Silloth from rising sea levels unless he's prepared to build a bloody great wall round the town.

I thought that Great Britain was tilting with the east coast sinking and parts of the west rising? I have seen loads of evidence of the erosion of the east coast. I have heard of many settlements of the west coast being similarly affected. Apart from the fact the guy seems a complete nut-job, that is!

The north of Britain is still rising a bit, and the south subsiding a bit, as rebound from the removal of ice, but after 10,000 years these movements are now very small. And it's a north-south thing not an east-west one. There's more erosion on the east coast because the rocks/sediments there are soft.

To be fair, a tidal barrage with a decent tidal power on the Solway Firth wouldn't be a terrible idea if you wanted to protect the towns in the area. Wind is good combined with decent storage options, but industry like Sellafield not too far away needs a constant source of predictable baseload power too.

Thought this one might be close at least, but not really. An impressive gain with an impressive candidate.
