Really don’t like this aspect of our democracy. Feel for the people of Chorley having no opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a nationsl event.

I guess it’s fair to say that Lindsay Hoyle managed to ride out the attempts to get rid of him after the whole Gaza debate controversy and he’ll pretty much have a free run here again
At the start of the Parliament though might we see verbal objections to him taking the Chair again when that’s usually always passed through unopposed for a returning Speaker? Can certainly see whatever is left of the SNP group at least trying to force a division in protest

There's already a Green candidate announced for this seat, I think.
Wouldn't be at all surprised for there to be a Workers' Party candidate, after the whole Gaza debate thing...

Good for the Greens putting a candidate up. They did against Bercow every time as well I think

The SNP stood against Michael Martin in both 2001 and 2005
If you go back as far as the 80s of course, both Labour and the SDP (Alliance) stood against the speaker in 87.
PLaid stood against the Speaker in 1979.
But I think you have to go back to 1895 for the last time the Conservatives stood against the Speaker.

In 1983 there was no incumbent Speaker seeking re-election.
