A third Labour leaflet, Reform and English Democrats (!) arrived by post and remarkably still nothing from Arnie. Almost have to remind myself that I’m not living in Manchester Central with the lack of Tory activity here - yes it’s a lost cause but it’s still a seat they technically hold (and held from 1983-97 which is why I resent the red wall description here) Received a 'glossy broadsheet' type Labour leaflet, but it was so boilerplate that it referred to a fictional "Bury South Town Centre" - which one? Yes there is regeneration going on (or planned) in Radcliffe and Prestwich (not sure about Whitefield which is often the squeezed middle child and doesn't have much of a town centre unless you count Morrisons) but nobody ever refers to the area as "Bury South town centre" Germany's Tagesschau (state news essentially) illustrated one of its articles on the election with a photo of Radcliffe town centre this morning.

That was pretty shocking. We did get a very wordy leaflet from him in the end. Very much a 2001-style result here with a turnout even lower but thankfully a swing to Labour and I am relieved Reform came third here - perhaps the splitting of Radcliffe spread the Reform votes across North and South (and I think they did even better in North but still third) Communist came last despite all the leafleting. Impressively, the Green held their deposit here despite little campaigning.

I have only just heard about the abuse given to Arnie Saunders. Disgraceful. Solidarity with Arnie

Sadly there are certain people who have a vested interest in permanent and poisonous division, instead.

For context of course to any outsiders here, the Radcliffe wards are held on the council by the localist Radcliffe First, so less surprising that RF voters flocked to Reform as there has been animosity to the Labour-run council for some time. People may talk down Radcliffe but Clacton it is not. Interestingly one thing I learnt from the leaflets is that Wakeford lives in Radcliffe. He didn't show his address on the ballot (fine by me) and when he was elected he was a councillor in Pendle so when he moved I don't know, but it's positive. I also have a feeling he inherited Ivan Lewis' Radcliffe office, who had moved his base from Prestwich a couple of years before the end of his tenure. Had he not been suspended by Corbyn for the various (unfounded) allegations he would almost certainly have held in 2019 (only just - but add Lewis' 1000 or so votes to Labour and he would have won) and would still be around now - a rare link to the class of 1997.
