The Burnley Constituency will change slightly, as the Boundary Commission, after full consultation, has redrawn the map to ensure that the vast majority of the 650 constituencies that elect an MP comprise of 72,000 -78,000 electors. It will consist of all 15 Wards that elect Councillors to Burnley Borough Council, with the addition of of Pendle Borough wards of: Brierfield East & Clover Hill & Brierfield West & Reedley.
At present, the 5 Councillors for the new additions are Independents, having resigned from the Labour party over their " Gaza Ceasefire " stance. If you add them to the 10 Independent Burnley Councillors who did the same, they would equal Labour with 15 Councillors each on Burnley Council, Conservatives would have 8, Lib Dems 7 and Greens 5 ...
A rather cynical friend has suggested that the best thing a local Conservative donor with £20,000 could do for his party in Burnley, is to donate £10,000 to the Reform Party on the condition they don't put up a Candidate locally, and £10,000 to George Galloway's Worker's Party on the condition that they do !!
As I write, the declared Candidates are ....
Antony Higginbottom ( Con ) Incumbent Oliver Ryan ( Lab ) Gordon Birtwistle ( L/D ) Former MP 2010-2015 Scott Cunliffe ( Green )

Very strange choice of Candidate from Labour which stinks to " High Heaven " ... There was a shortlist before the hustings, held in July 2022 of four Candidates .. labourlist.org/2022/07/four-candidates-included-on-shortlist-for-burnley-parliamentary-selection/The Candidate from Southend, Ashley Dalton was never a serious contender, especially after the Kitty Usher " fiasco "some years ago !! Mark Townsend was the former Labour leader on Burnley Council, but after Labour's defeat in 2019, issued a blistering attack on Corbyn and his acolytes on Facebook, talking about being fed up of " defending the indefensible " etc. Sobia Malik was the daughter of Burnley's first Muslim Mayor, Rafiq Malik and sister of former MP for Dewsbury, Shahid Malik. During the expenses scandal, he was the MP claiming the highest expenses of any MP ( £185,421 ) in the Country, including being the only MP to employ his father, paying him between £13,566 - £25,195 for undisclosed services. Oliver Ryan is a Tameside Councillor, and Chair of his local CLP. He is/was Chair of the Labour Local Govt Co-Operative, which provides training and support to local Labour Partys. He's 28, and is serving his 3rd Term as a Councillor ... frankly, if anyone is vulnerable to the charge, " Never had a proper job in his life ", it's Oliver .. It may sound ridiculous, but if Galloway's party stand, and Reform don't, I can see the winner getting elected with less than 12,000 votes ...

There's something in the water in East Lancashire that keeps Liberal Democrats " young at heart " ... Gordon Lishman, 77, who is still a serving Burnley Councillor, with his wife Margaret, stood for the Liberal Party in both the February & October 1974 General Elections in the Bradford North Constituency. He stood for them again in Pendle in 1983 and 1987. He was the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Blackburn in 2015, and then stood in Pendle again in both 2017 and 2019. He joined " Age Concern England " in 1974, and became it's Director General in 2000, and led it during its merger with " Help the Aged " to form what is now " Age UK ". I don't agree with him on too much politically, but have every respect for him as a man and his record of Public Service. He was awarded an OBE in 1994, and a CBE in 2006, for " Services to older people "

I'm sure I remember reading that though it seems less likely when I think about it as he have only been 66 or so.

No he wasn't, several had been older including Labour's Ernie Roberts in 1979.

Presumably endorsing an independent - they've been clear that they'll choose to do this in some seats.

Interesting that the Reform UK candidate has an address in the Pendle and Clitheroe constituency while the Reform candidate in Pendle and Clitheroe has an address in the Burnley constituency.

Presumably endorsing an independent - they've been clear that they'll choose to do this in some seats. This was posted on the Worker's Party website yesterday ... " Having listed a number of pre-approved candidates, the Workers Party has engaged with Independents and other groups who made representations to us. We have successfully resolved a large number of contested seats and considered numerous submissions from non-party Independents. After the deadline passes today we will post here a consolidated list of those Workers Party candidates who successfully submitted their papers. " If that's the case, I think probably Rayyan Fiass ( judging from the proposer, seconder and assentors ) fits the bill .. He's listed as a Company Director for 5 separate entities at Companies House. David Roper is an ex Lib-Dem/Independent Councillor who served one term between 2016-2020, and did not seek re-election. He reappeared in the last set of local elections, standing as an Independent in Whittlefield with Ightenhill, and polled 10.1%. Mitchell Cryer has been a regular Candidate in the same ward for the past 4 sets of locals. A graphic designer, he last polled 3.4% in May 2024. It seems that Mr Fiass has nominated himself on his form, I presume that's permitted ? Burnley Council has an excellent and helpful Elections team, as I know from personal experience, they wouldn't have missed that if so ...

Yes, the Electoral Commission explicitly state that this is permissible.
