Just a generic "like" for kicking off all these constituency threads.

Labour’s erstwhile candidate has stood down: Might Tom Ross (council leader) want to give it a go? … cue Burnham ramping in 3…2…

Connor Rand has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for Altrincham and Sale West, following Ben Hartley's decision to step away from being the candidate. He seems to have some connection to Manchester, though I'm not too certain it's actually connected to Trafford borough itself - he also spent some time in Norwich it seems, and is involved in Usdaw. He used to have a profile on Twitter, but it is no longer there (and some people have claimed the deletion is recent) - nothing archived from the account seems to be particularly damning, so I must admit I'm slightly confused by the way they're going about this. Not often you have a Labour candidate shrouded in mystery.
Additionally, Young Labour/Labour Students are set to go to this constituency on Sunday... glad to see the local party finally getting some attention!

Same as S&U- the Lib Dems reviving the old game of piling on loads of nominators!

Same as S&U- the Lib Dems reviving the old game of piling on loads of nominators! This is either an outdated game, or a has-always-been-incorrect one.
"If a nomination form contains more than ten subscribers’ signatures, only the first ten will be accepted. If any of the first ten subscribers are invalid, the (A)RO must hold the nomination form invalid, regardless of whether the form contains more than ten."
Which I only found out after delivering an oversubscribed paper - although only by one - this week.

Accurate. But you can submit more than one complete nomination paper.

Accurate. But you can submit more than one complete nomination paper. "Each candidate shall be nominated by a separate nomination paper, in the form in the Appendix delivered..." The legislation is singular. Maybe a legal question that's never been tested in court, for example if two nomination papers each contained invalid signatures.

I think we can safely say the Conservatives' luck has finally run out in this constituency and that after this election there will not be a single Conservative seat in Greater Manchester (from 2001-10 it was the only one).

Luck and demographics. The writings has been on the wall for a while. That Graham Brady is a local probably kept it Tory for longer than it might have been. If there ends up being not one Conservative seat in Greater Manchester this time out, Alty won't be the first one back in an upturn. It is just not the same seat as in 2010.

Not only based on the fact that it has the largest Tory majority, more than ASW, but if in the unlikely event polls narrowed a bit then Bolton West probably has a less minuscule chance than ASW of being a just about Con hold - the 2017 result in BW (where Hilling should have easily regained it) showed that it doesn’t behave like other seats and the anti-Labour sentiment in the background is considerable. I’m not sure how boundary changes affect it though, mind. If Galloway had taken his circus to Oldham East and Saddleworth there could have been a very strange result there - he does have a candidate there, but that’s a discussion for that thread.

I sometimes have to step back and remind myself that it's a whole decade since my local party decided to target Altrincham ward, a few months before I even signed up as a member. A decade isn't a generation, but it's getting close to one!!

LAB 42% CON 36% LD 19% OTH 3%
Altrincham has changed hugely since 1997 and the tramlink has caused a general yuppification of the seat, and the old money has either died or moved on.

It's not the tramlink but the BBC. The tram and the predecessor trains have been in place since about 1850. Brooklands was the world's first purpose-built commuter estate.

I don't think yuppification is the right word. 'old money' usually implies gentry (which makes the phrase 'gentrification' a bit of a nonsense if you think about it). I stand to be corrected but I don't think Altrincham constituency was ever dominated by the aristocracy

Absolute bullshit. Before the tram link, the same line was used by British Rail trains travelling every 15 minutes between Altrincham and Alderley Edge via Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations. Half went via Stockport and the other half via Style. In the words of Alan Partridge, they rebadged it you fool! I don’t think you would find much ‘old money’ in Atrincham. More likely in Hale and further out?
