Very odd choice for Tice to stand here.

Very odd choice for Tice to stand here. Perhaps he forgot about the byelection. I vaguely remember that Hartlepool had some UKIP organisational strength pre referendum. There MAY be some remnant of that and it MAY have gone to Reform. Didn't show in the by-election as they were split among several UKIPy candidates and the Boris led Tories were still the red wall champions. They're unlikely to win anywhere, but if they were this wouldn't be a bad shout. By-election was a different time.

Personally think Tice's style would be far better suited to very Brexity Essex constituency like Clacton, Maldon or Harwich.

If I remember right he was going to contest Uxbridge against Boris in 2019 then switched to Hartlepool after the decision was made to not contest Tory held seats

Perhaps he's genuinely fallen in love with the place. I've seen it happen to the most ambitiously rootless types (and Tice isn't even that ambitious) in the most unlikely places.

I don't think Tice's style would be particularly suited to anywhere, given that he has no discernable charisma.

But the parallel is still appropriate - I don't think there are many seats where Starmer would have done appreciably better or worse than another Labour candidate prior to becoming leader and I think the same applies to Tice and Reform candidates. If he'd do better in Clacton, it's not because he has a particular appeal to Essex voters, it's because that is stronger territory for Reform than Hartlepool is.

There are some wealthier Brexity seats where Tice may do comparatively well. It is funny to think of him as a private sector version of Starmer, but it does seem apt.

Perhaps he's genuinely fallen in love with the place. Mandelson seemed to, until he went off to Europe.

Offttt. Mind if we manage to retain our deposit here it bodes well for a lot of NE seats and means less begging emails for cash post election. 👍

This is quite close to what the YouGov MRP is saying.
