I knew the last MP for Consett, David Watkins (Lab, 1966-1983), very well. He was a member of my CLP and during our successful campaign to win West Twickenham ward in 1994 became an active one, until his death pretty much. He was a man of great integrity & someone I liked very much. He was pro-Arab in his outlook but never descended into the kinds of antisemitism one sometimes sees amongst pro-Arab campaigners today. He sadly had a massive stroke at home on Christmas Eve some years ago, and was trapped by I think a bookcase falling on him as he collapsed. When he did not turn up in Wales as expected on Christmas Day, the alarm was raised, the police broke down his door & rescued him, and he was taken to hospital, but never recovered to any extent & sadly died a few months later. He wrote a book about his time as an MP, 17 Years of Obscurity (he was never on the front bench), which I found very interesting. His parliamentary career ended when his constituency disappeared.
