Notional results since 1945. The 2019 result is the 'official' (Thrasher & Rallings) notional - the others are my own work | Con | Lab | Lib | Ind Lab | | | | | | 1945 | 39.2% | 41.4% | | 18.6% | 1950 | 45.4% | 45.1% | 4.9% | 4.6% | 1951 | 47.4% | 52.6% | | | 1955 | 50.4% | 49.6% | | | 1959 | 50.8% | 47.3% | 1.9% | | 1964 | 44.7% | 48.3% | 7.0% | | 1966 | 41.5% | 53.1% | 5.4% | |
| Con | Lab | Lib/LD | Grn | | | | | | 1970 | 45.7% | 51.1% | 3.2% | | 1974 | 36.3% | 43.1% | 19.6% | | 1974 | 36.2% | 46.5% | 15.4% | | 1979 | 43.9% | 43.0% | 11.2% | | 1983 | 41.3% | 34.9% | 18.4% | | 1987 | 42.6% | 37.6% | 18.0% | 1.4% | 1992 | 43.0% | 43.4% | 11.7% | 1.7% |
| Con | Lab | LD | Grn | Ref/UKIP/ BXP | | | | | | | 1997 | 30.9% | 54.6% | 10.2% | 0.4% | 1.4% | 2001 | 29.9% | 51.3% | 14.2% | 2.5% | 1.0% | 2005 | 34.6% | 38.0% | 21.8% | 4.5% | 0.8% | 2010 | 39.4% | 35.7% | 20.9% | 1.7% | 1.1% | 2015 | 43.5% | 42.7% | 4.9% | 4.6% | 4.1% | 2017 | 35.4% | 56.9% | 6.0% | 1.1% | 0.6% | 2019 | 30.5% | 50.8% | 13.9% | 3.1% | 1.8% |
Interesting trajectory here. The first two results are skewed by Indepent Labour MP for Hammersmith North, Denis Pritt, who almost cost Labour the seat in 1945 and did so in 1950, resulting in an against the trend Labour gain in 1951 when normal service was resumed, before returning to the Conservatives in 1955. One of those seats (of which there were several in London) which the Conservatives lost fairly narrowly in 1964 but did not come close to recovering in 1970. One of those seats that the Conservatives won in 1979 but lost in 1992 (but actually too close to call in both years - it might have been the other way around?). It feels like the Conservatives haven't fallen away to the extent they have in other London seats - albeit the results in 2017 and 2019 were pretty appalling - and could become competitive again in the not too distant future

This is now my constituency and would have been absolutely fascinating had it existed previously.

it would some years, though not in current circumstances. As it happens I walked down British Grove on Saturday; there aren't many more low-key borough boundaries than that little lane.

Yes, it’s a foregone conclusion at the moment. The Borough boundary between H&F and Hounslow is virtually imperceptible on the ground and not surprisingly most residents in Chiswick look towards Hammersmith rather than Hounslow, with which they have few ties. So in many respects the new constituency better reflects local identity. The only missing bit is the part of W4 which forms the majority of the electorate in Southfield ward in LB of Ealing.

On the (very sumptuous) riverside the only clue you've crossed the boundary is a pair of "Controlled Zone" signs. They say the same thing going in both directions, but presumably the two zones are legally distinct and at that point you leave Hounslow's and enter Hammersmith & Fulham's (or vice versa).

And there are enclaves of Chiswick within the borough of Hounslow that have Hammersmith’s W6 postcode
