That's interesting, Labour narrowly winning in both 1974 elections on these boundaries whereas the Croydon Central of the time very narrowly eluded Labour in October that year. David White won the Croydon Central GLC seat in 1973, but was never able to repeat his success in parliamentary elections

This seat doesn't bear very much resemblance to the Croydon Central of that era (nor to any other seat though I'd guess its about half and half Central and North West with a bit of North East thrown in). Funnily enough I had never heard of David White before this evening and he has now been mentioned twice on this forum (perhaps the first mention prompted the second)

I have mentioned him occasionally before on this forum. I remember that on one occasion Davıd Boothroyd uncharacteristically made an error in confusing David White (former Labour Party GLC member for Croydon Central) with his contemporary David Simpson (former Labour Party GLC member for Croydon North East). David White lives near me in Park Hill (I leafleted his house this morning), and we often see each other at political or social occasions; David Simpson was my Politics A-Level teacher in 1989-90, at which time he was a member of the Owenite continuing-SDP.

I remember reports of the 1979 general election saying that White was really suffering & was clearly going to do down to a heavy defeat in Croydon Central, which indeed he did. Those newspaper reports were the first I'd heard of him but of course he had stood in the seat previously too

My friend Walter Wolfgang stood there in the 1959 general election. I don't think he had any connexion to the area & I'm rather surprised they selected him; he lived in the same flat in Richmond from 1939 until his death a few years ago. He had lived in a different flat in the same block after coming over here on the Kindertransport the year before.

The Liberal candidate in that 1959 election was Arnold Bender who I presume was the same person as the nutritionist of that name, author of such books as "The Facts on Food".

Sarah Jones (Labour) Simon Fox (Conservative) Marley King (Green) John Kouten (WPB) Marley King has had to stand down as Green candidate for personal reasons. Ria Patel has been selected via a ballot of members in the constituency.

Many Lib Dem/Jahir Hussain window posters are up in shop windows in Croydon West, but many of the same shops also have Workers Party posters, and a couple have Labour, Lib Dem and Workers Party posters up. The Taking the Initiative campaign appears to be illegally flyposting everywhere. The only posters I've spotted in homes are a few Labour ones in Broad Green, Fairfield, and West Thornton. About four orange diamonds in West Thornton and a few Green posters dotted around Fairfield. Fairplay to Simon Fox, the Tory candidate; he knows he has no chance but has taken the time to attend most hustings despite knowing the hostile reception he'll get.... unlike Sarah Jones. Some people have ramped up the Lib Dem chances... They have no chance, obviously, but may finish a very distant second.

The last one he was thrown out rather heavy handedly after having a go at the party leadership specifically Jack Straw. He was readmitted to cheers the next day.

A long-haired weirdo in the town centre today gave me a leaflet for April Ashley (TUSC). The text mentions the Socialist Party much more than TUSC specifically.

Yes, I remember this when it was on the news. My English tutor was also in attendance and she was discussing this with us afterwards. It did gain major coverage.

Croydon West —> 4:05am was a relatively early declaration time for a Croydon constituency. The council did an investigation into why the local election count in 2022 took so long (31 hours spread over 4 days) and I presume they managed to work out some bits of improvement in how the count was managed. The other change was that this time the count was in the council office building instead of Trinity School. Somehow the layout of the rooms was better and worked better.
