It doesn't seem right that the Tory high water mark is... 2001 I think there was some Bangledeshi politics around that time, although I did think that the high watermark was the even less likely 1997 (it was either the only or one of only two seats that increased the Tory share of the vote in 97). The Bangledeshi vote also explains why almost half the vote seemed to desert for Galloway in 2005. The Tories also started winning councillors in Tower Hamlets then for the first time in just about ever, but the other half of the borough, so the knowledge of this may have helped their chances - but I don't put too much in that. They were still a presence when the Tories were plummeting after 2015.

In 1997 and 2001 Labour's candidate was Oona King. The Conservative candidates (different at the 2 elections) were Bangladeshis, and in 2001 the only Bangladeshi candidate.

I have to say that selecting a Jewish candidate in a constituency with a lot of Muslims definitely wasn’t a smart decision on Labour’s part, and shows how little they knew (or were naive enough to think that the ones who came here are vastly different) about Muslim anti-semitism at the time.

Her majorities in 1997 and 2001 were comfortable. It was only the appearance of the Galloway circus in 2005 that derailed matters (for reasons we all know).

Not sure. Looking at the Iraq war, there were Jewish candidates who supported Iraq. However, both Bethnal Green and Stepney, and Manchester Gorton, with many Muslim voters, had a Jewish MP who was anti-Israel and strongly pro-Palestine - Gerald Kaufman. Oona King was not, and Galloway used this, including Iraq and Palestine.

I know, but I suspect that her majorities would have been (pretty significantly) bigger if she had no Jewish heritage. I should note that I’m not saying that all (or most) of the Bangladeshi community is anti-Semitic, many of them who voted for another candidate simply disagreed with her views or just followed the recommendation of community leaders.

You mean they are nasty racist bigots. Or is that exclusively a slur addressed to the white majority? I tend to use milder language, but you aren’t wrong about some of them…

Looking at results of this seat's predecessor (and successor) Bethnal Green & Bow, most likely Ajmal Masroor who was the only Independent candidate in Greater London to save his deposit in the 2019 election.

No, that honour goes to Oxford East's ballot paper, which has 12 candidates. Oxford East is the type of seat that regularly attracts long ballot papers irrespective of who its MP is.
