Unfortunately it was not to be and the elected candidate here appears to be particularly odious, having presided over Theresa May’s awful campaign and I almost prefer his predecessor. Then again, Timothy’s borderline-Reform views probably helped stave off the Reform threat here. Speaking of Hancock, if he was not suspended/restored the whip and stood again, could we have had another Truss moment here? Safe seat, nationally controversial and unpopular figure, well known for going abroad instead of the constituency, etc.

Does anyone else think the Conservatives would have lost this if Matt Hancock had stood again? Perhaps it could have been a very surprising Reform gain seeing as their Deputy Leader was standing and they weren't that far off even with a Conservative candidate who sounds like he's in Reform much of the time.

I suspect that Hancock might have actually managed to lose this, as likely would Kwasi Kwarteng in Spelthorne had he stood again. Though one also suspects Labour would have won both - we might have had a Sittingbourne and Sheppey type result here.
Haverhill was of course notable as a local UKIP stronghold a decade ago.
