Heather Wheeler has posted on Facebook that she intends to stand again. Mildly surprising.

Heather Wheeler has posted on Facebook that she intends to stand again. Mildly surprising. Because she’s likely to lose or for other reasons do you mean? She’s 65. Her prospects of office are minimal. Her health has been chancy. She should win. But her local party has been fractious. Labour was successful in the last local elections and now run the council. The boundary changes favour Labour. Reform has a candidate and should appeal here. An outside chance of a surprise.

The Labour candidate Samantha Niblett certainly seems, if her social media is any guide, to be formidably active and optimistic by nature.

I have had the misfortune to meet Heather Wheeler a few times. Good God were the Tories scraping the barrel making her a minister. I see a Labour gain here, things seemed to have really changed in Labour's favour around these parts and whilst it is not an easy gain i would not be surprised if it was in the low 1000s.

If the local party is super fractious then maybe she’s standing purely to block someone else.

SOPN hereAs above plus Paul Liversuch (Socialist Labour)- stood here in 2001 and 2010 and Amy Wheelton (Independent) - Seales ward councillor, elected as a Tory but long since distanced from them now. Won by-election after resigning her seat in 2021.

A fairly comfortable Labour win. Delighted.

A fairly comfortable Labour win. Delighted. Delighted indeed to see the back of 'Ev, a truly awful individual - good riddance to bad rubbish.

A fairly comfortable Labour win. Delighted. Delighted indeed to see the back of 'Ev, a truly awful individual - good riddance to bad rubbish. Her remarks upon defeat were unsurprisingly graceless and petty Outgoing Conservative MP of 14 years, Heather Wheeler, said: "South Derbyshire is incredibly special. To represent since 1995 in one way or another has been my political life's work. "I wish everybody well with the new incumbent. I regret everything that's happened, but it's a new dawn. "Good luck South Derbyshire, you'll need it." This earns her a strong entry in the Sore Loser thread.

I didn’t spot evidence of edge and nastiness in the campaign that might prompt that. I’m assuming that the winner observed the normal courtesies.
