Found this today
It was part of their 2014 European election coverage, and is based around European election results.

Am I missing something? In what way is that an “alternative”? It’s an account of what happened from 1979 to 2009.

I guess they meant an alternative way at looking at it.
I'd forgotten the Kilroy Silk was involved with UKIP, so I thought the article was more alternative than it is, which it isn't. Oh well.

There is an alternative history in which Kilroy became the Farage figure in the 2010s. As it's turned out he didn't even get a GB News gig.

But Kilroy was not a mere spokesman outside the mainstream or even an extremist. He just unfortunately became increasingly deranged. That is a sadness rather than a genuine point of view. He is not comparable with other politicians.

Or to use a more contemporary reference, he could have been our Pim Fortuyn? It is reliably claimed that he genuinely hoped to win Erewash at the 2005 GE and it was a massive blow to his ego when he actually came 4th.

Do you mean “genuinely expected” rather than “genuinely hoped”? Presumably all candidates of the main parties “genuinely hope” to win, even though most of them are sensible enough to know they won’t.

I think it is beyond reasonable doubt that he expected to do significantly better than he actually did.
