To be strictly accurate re the above excellent profile, it is Gretna Green that is famous internationally - rather than the larger adjacent town of Gretna. However the latter is an interesting place in its own right, and in its environs it is possible for students of relatively modern archaeology to find scattered remains of the huge military complex that was set up during WW1 - and that the Gretna Township itself was created for. Until recently there was a weird large blank area on maps of the area. More recent maps clearly show a huge ammunition storage facility. Most major MoD sites were simply left off public Ordnance Survey maps, until very recently.
