Before I took a sabbatical from the Forum I pointed out that the LibDems were doing rather well in Wiltshire in local by-elections, and that has continued for the last six months. Alan Hagger is an impressive candidate with a background in PCC administration: had the Tories not changed the system to FPTP I think he would have won. As it is, the Party's weakness in Swindon probably means that he won't.

It would have been a bit rum for Labour to have won with them coming in fourth place with a derisory vote in the area where by far the majority of the population live, purely because of the differential turnout as a result of local elections being held in Swindon. I think the correct result here.
