Yeah, I wasn't sure whether to tag it in the same way as I have Northumbria, but I've heard nothing about this beyond the stated intent. If the SY combined authority now doesn't include Chesterfield etc then I imagine it is more likely to go ahead.

The planned timetable for the change, which if stuck to would mean a mayoral not a pcc election is on the linked pdf.

The Mayoral Combined Authority board
176 RESOLVED that the Board:- 1. Formally endorse the proposals to transfer the Police and Crime Commissioner functions to the Mayor with effect from May 2024 and to the reduction in the present mayoral term to align with the PCC election cycle of May 2024; and Agree for the Head of Paid Service to consent on behalf of the MCA to the order required to facilitate the transfer of PCC functions to the Mayor.
However they were hoping the order calling for the transfer of powers from 8th May 2024, to be laid in Parliament on 7th December. This hasn't happened from what I can see, so South Yorkshire pcc election isn't yet off and a mayoral one isn't yet called instead.

If a Metro Mayor and PC(F)C [is that the right order?] cover the exact same area, surely we're now at the point where we ask why keep them separate?

There won't be any meaningful opposition to doing away with the PCC in South Yorkshire. The current PCC Alan Billings is in favour of the change, though it maybe he just wants to retire.

Government response to consultation is now up on that page as a pdf. The home secretary has decided to proceed with the amalgamation of the roles so there should be no pcc election in South Yorkshire in 2024 but a Mayoral one.
