Franco Marini is leading in the first ballot being held today. Only MPs and regional deputies are allowed to vote.

Marini flopped today. He was almost 200 votes behind what he should have got on paper.
Bersani agreed with Berlusconi and Monti on Marini's name yesterday evening. But at the parliamentary meeting he got 90 PD MPs voting against the proposal (with 221 in favour and 21 abstantions and around 100 skipping the vote). So another mess, in the typical fashion for Italian centre-left.
Now we should wait for the 4th vote, the first one with the threshold at 50+1% instead of 2/3.
On a technical point, not all regional deputies can vote. Just 3 representatives of each regional council (except Valle d'Aosta with just 1 IIRC).

Result of the 4th ballot and still no new president elect: Romano Prodi 395 Stefano Rodota 213 Anna Maria Cancellieri 78 Massimo D'Alema 15 Franco Marini 3 Giorgio Napolitano 2 Other candidates 7 Blank/invalid papers 19 Abstentions 275 Total 1007
As Andrea said, 50% +1 is needed to elect a president, ie. 504 votes. The fifth ballot takes place tomorrow.

They begged Napolitano to carry on. He accepted. New vote at 3 PM CET.

738 votes for Napolitano who is re-elected
Grillo is protesting and he's calling for a big mass protest outside the House of Deputies right now.

I believe there is only one serving head of state who is older: Robert Mugabe (aged 89).

No Shimon Peres is currently the oldest head of state. The King of Saudi Arabia and President of Ethiopia are both older than the Italian President as well. Italian presidents have all lived past 80. Of the 11 post war presidents, all but three have made it to 87!
