BBC reporting that the Green candidate has pulled out of the race but their name will still appear on the ballot paper which I think is inaccurate as she isn’t on the SOPN. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crgyny5j85no

Unusually the correction hasn’t been highlighted.

it might surprise many, but the top priority for Houchen was not Teesworks or the Freeport it was the promise to wrest Durham/Tees Valley Airport from the asset stripper Peel who had bought it off the local councils, had run it down, scrapped all holiday flights, all with the intention of closing the airport and building God only knows how many houses on it. This was a cause celebre which had, and still has massive public support across the Tees Valley. It is also interesting that Peel did exactly the same thing to South Yorkshires Robin Hood airport at Doncaster, and there is campaign there to bring it back into operation.
Houchen got it back off Peel, he changed the name back to Teesside, brought back the holiday flights, more every year. He has opened up the huge area south of the runaway by building an access road, and has a number of aviation companies moving in, including some relocating from other airports. This was the defining promise Houchen made, and he is highly regarded for doing it.
Well it seems the Labour candidate for Tees Valley Mayor Chris McEwan, who is deputy mayor of Darlington council, didn't share the vision of Houchen. It is hardly surprising since he has never worked in the profit led private sector, spending most of his career in the appalling money wasting NHS. In contrast his vision seems to be some vague plan to do something about the buses, hardly inspiring, however it now turns out he fully supported the closure of the airport and the plans of Peel to cover the airport land with housing, and now Houchen is attacking him full on like a dog with a bone.
Interesting times.

Best thing for that airport - turn it into housing. So speaks somebody who has around 8 major airports within a 100 miles to choose from. Would you like to elaborate why it should be turned into housing, or are you just of the opinion that the people that occupy the 120 miles between Newcastle and Leeds shouldn't have access to international air travel locally with access to a hub like Schiphol as well as holiday destinations.

I am firmly of the opinion that Southampton/Or Bournemouth should be turned into housing. Why - because there is a requirement for housing and if you don't want to build on greenfield (current Tory policy) then it represents a huge brownfield opportunity for a mixed use development. And stops it being a drain on the taxpayer. Same with the former RAF Finningley. DTV has had more lives than Lazarus and now the taxpayer owns it the taxpayer can extract the purchase price. Plus ofc pay off the ever rising solicitor's bills from Houchen's increasingly doomed trips to court where he tried to extract economic rents from the private sector.

Since the housing problem is in the South, here's an idea, close Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, London City, Southampton, Bournemouth, Bristol and any I've missed, as well as the subsidised London Underground and Overground, build thousands of houses on the land, and make southern Liberal Democrats and Greens travel up to Birmingham and East Midlands to get their aircraft to Bali for their next conference on Net Zero.

Looking at the data tables I'd shade this poll slightly blue (despite the 1-respondent Lab lead). Lab support draws a lot from people who didn't vote in 2021, and a Con lead emerges if you restrict it to those certain to vote. Houchen running ahead of the Con brand but still a big swing since 2021. Possible Lab could win Cleveland PCC election, I'd think.

On the other hand , Tory voters are much more likely to abstain compared with 2021. 2021 Labour abstainers are probably more likely to vote this year.
