Candidates' booklet received today, printed in London!!!
Green not included. No doubt they couldn't afford the £3,500. But surely that's a cheap way of reaching every door?

No Reform address either. Tories don't appear to have made much effort visually with their address - particularly when contrasted with the other three. Would've thought they would've used one of their usual leaflet templates for this - looks like it's been hastily put together in Word.

One candidate has included one of my pet hates. “I love the North East, and I know you do too…” No, you don’t know that. I might be absolutely desperate to leave. Or I might just like living there. But then another has one over the “My Dad was a bus driver” brigade with “My Dad was a tank driver.”

As an independent there really is little point to expectation management - if you lose, you lose and there's little to be gained by trying to spin the result as not so bad, whereas there is a clear advantage to making it look like you could win.

For what it's worth, TUSC have endorsed Driscoll.

For what it's worth, TUSC have endorsed Driscoll. Probably the best use of “for what it’s worth” I’ve seen in a long while…

I can understand why, as someone who is young and living in the North East (and not happy about it). Good quality jobs, especially away from either engineering or the public sector, are quite hard to come by and pay rather less than equivalents in other regions. While there are exceptions, as a general rule the atmosphere in the North East just isn't pleasant, and it's got worse in the last few years (anti social behaviour has got worse everywhere but Tyne and Wear seems to have it particularly bad, from experience). And it's also a very insular part of the world - if you don't fit in, you really don't fit in - perhaps that'd be alright in some places but not in a region where travel to anywhere else is often slow and expensive. The only benefit is that the housing is cheap... but there's a reason for that!

It’s illuminating that More in Common are heavily downplaying Driscoll in the analysis, saying he’s not very well known and is heavily reliant on differential turnout. His campaign is overwhelmingly social/mainstream media, with no real ground game as far as I can see. According to the poll he’s basically picking up the NOTA vote by default, but I don’t see much reason for it to all coalesce around him in practice.

I don't see his appeal and never have really - in his original stint as Northumberland mayor he was widely seen as not terribly impressive.
But a "martyr" persona can be quite appealing in the right circumstances - as we have seen before.
If he does win we can fairly safely put it down to Labour's "briefcase" tendency overreaching itself.
(especially since McGuinness would almost certainly have been selected anyway)

I'm fine with Rotheram so I'll vote Labour - but I'd vote for Driscoll.
