There was an Ansells pub as far West as the Corvedale, would you believe. there were many Ansells pubs in SE Wales too. In fact even in Pembrokeshire If it really was as bad as I'm told, then some sort of formal public apology from the city's civic leaders may be warranted.

Brew XI was a terrible beer as well, as Chris from Brum put it correctly the superior M&B products were Springfield Bitter and Highgate Mild and to be honest, I didn't think a lot of Springfield Bitter. terrible is a bit strong, but it was inferior to the other products you mention. The M&B Mild was perfectly pleasant (maybe it's still brewed under licence?) but Highgate Mild was better. Holden's & Batham's mild ales, however, are better still. Simpkiss didn't brew one in my lifetime but probably did in years past Simpkiss did brew a mild, but discontinued it in the early 80's. Not all of their pubs took it, and it wasn't that highly regarded. Holden's however, is excellent, and Bathams is good too, but rather overshadowed by their famous bitter. I haven't seen M&B Mild anywhere for ages. I used to drink it in the city centre pub where I was something of a regular a long time ago, but I really preferred Ansell's.

oh, undoubtedly that's what would have happened. Having had a quick look, they only bought out breweries relatively local to them, so It may have been that some pubs in Wales were 're-badged' as Ansells when they became part of Allied in 1961 in an attempt to make it a more 'national' brand.
They nicked the Squirrel logo off one of the breweries they bought.

The Holt brewery company, to be precise, whose original building still stands as the Gosta Green, very close to Aston University, having had various names over the years and a period as a "Firkin" pub, though I don't think it brewed any of its own beer unlike some in the chain.

Much better than the M&B drink. It may still be brewed under licence though I have not seen it for a long time. The bitter was adequate but not up to much.

St Austell occasionally produce a mild called Cornish Cream. I used to drink it in a social club in Plymouth until around 2009 when it disappeared but I know that it's popped up since. It was absolutely cracking, far better than the Mouldy and Bilious Mild and the Courage Mild I was selling at the time.

St Austell is ok, but it’s a ubiquitous tipple in most parts.

Something that is ubiquitous is available everywhere, not just in most parts. #pedantscorner

I'm not usually a nitrokeg fan but both were decent enough. They also do a collaboration with Roddas which sounds less appealing.

I expect a dull and uneventful campaign here with a predictable result. It is possible that there could be developments before polling day that lead to me revising my opinion but I think it unlikely.
1) Street will be easily re-elected 2) It will tell us next to nothing about likely general election results in the region
Andy Street has an established personal brand that is largely separate from that of the Tory party. Lots of Labour supporters will happily vote for him because: he is the only candidate they have heard of, he always seems to say sensible (and not obviously Tory) stuff and he has not done anything that they have noticed as mayor to annoy them. To challenge him Labour would need to select a high profile candidate (which they have not done) and spend a lot of money to promote this candidate and undermine Street with some effective attacks on his record. This would need to be supported by a serious ground game to drive up turnout in Labour areas, including in Birmingham that does not have any council elections. I doubt that any of this will happen. They will concentrate campaigning on the council elections, they will save their money for the general election and there will be little more than a token effort in Birmingham. I would be very happy to be proved wrong.

How come there isn't a Black County combined authority? The 'West Midlands' seems like such a construct. Cf. modern Staffordshire's weird boundaries. The 4 boroughs of The Black Country are slightly bigger than the borough of Birmingham. Tell them that and they'd vote for a combined black country just to get one over on their near neighbour.

Street quite rightly keeps his distance from the national Tories and has a profile, I have yet to hear anything from the Labour candidate. Still nothing from the Labour candidate. Two leaflets from Street ahd yes, I have checked with others in case I am on a "do not deliver list" from Labour.
