Since 2016 Rotherham has had all-up elections in leap years, with the 2020 elections of course postponed to 2021. The 2021 result was Lab 32, Con 20, Lib Dem 3, Rotherham Democratic Party 3, Ind 1. The RDP was formed largely from the previous UKIP group, though one of the councillors elected had defected from Labour. The RDP has since wound up, and the two remaining councillors elected as such are sitting as Independents.
The current situation (August 2023) is Lab 34, Con 15, Lib Dem 4, Ind 6 (two as "Independent Conservative", the rest simply as "Independent"). Three of the changes are due to by-elections (Lab gain from Con in Aughton & Swallownest, Lib Dem gain from Con in Anston & Woodsetts, Lab gain from RDP in Keppel) and the rest due to councillors elected as Con or RDP becoming Independent.
Edit 14 March 2024: now Lab 32, Con 15, Lib Dem 4, Ind 8 following the two Labour councillors in Wales ward leaving the party
Edit 8 April 2024: now Lab 31, Con 15, Lib Dem 4, Ind 9.

The areas in the new Rawmarsh & Conisbrough constituency elected 11 Labour councillors and 4 Conservatives in 2021. Two of the Conservatives took the last seats in wards where Labour topped the poll; the other two were in Bramley & Ravenfield ward, which is an outlier in this group, being east of the Don, and demographically looks much more like a Rother Valley ward.
Hoober (3: Lab, Lab, ConInd) This ward contains the rather attractive village of Wentworth and the core of the Wentworth Woodhouse estate including the house and the follies of the Needle's Eye and Hoober Stand, the latter of which presumably gives it its name, but much of the population is in the more urban areas of Brampton Bierlow and West Melton west of Wath upon Dearne. It is one of the less deprived wards in the north of the borough, though this is not saying much. The Conservatives gained the third seat in 2021, one vote ahead of Labour's third candidate who was well behind the other two. The Conservative councillor has since left the party, and this looks like a likely Labour gain.
Managerial and professional 28.8% (9/25), routine and semi-routine 28.8% (13/25), degree level 25.4% (8/25), no qualifications 19.9% (18/25), owned 64.3% (16/25), social rented 19.8% (12/25), white British 94.9% (10/25)
Wath (2: Lab, Lab) This simply covers the town of Wath upon Dearne. Wath is a deprived working class town and Labour won both seats in 2021 very easily.
Managerial and professional 23.5% (17/25), routine and semi-routine 31.1% (10/25), degree level 21.6% (17/25), no qualifications 26.3% (8/25), owned 55.5% (18/25), social rented 28.2% (4/25), white British 94.0% (15/25)
Swinton Rockingham (2: Lab, Lab) This ward covers the west and north-west of Swinton. Marquess of Rockingham was one of the titles held for a time by the Wentworth clan, most notably by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and twice Prime Minister, and there's a Rockingham Road in the area. Swinton has a convenient railway station and has more less deprived pockets than Wath or Rawmarsh, but is still generally a working class area. Labour won both seats very easily in 2021.
Managerial and professional 25.8% (14/25), routine and semi-routine 30.5% (12/25), degree level 22.3% (14/25), no qualifications 23.3% (10/25), owned 64.6% (14/25), social rented 22.6% (11/25), white British 96.2% (3/25)
Kilnhurst & Swinton East (2: Lab, Lab) This ward forms the eastern part of the town of Swinton, and the area of Kilnhurst which is part of the same built up area as Swinton. Again Labour won both seats very easily in 2021.
Managerial and professional 26.3% (13/25), routine and semi-routine 30.6% (11/25), degree level 22.3% (14/25), no qualifications 21.6% (14/25), owned 71.6% (7/25), social rented 18.1% (13/25), white British 95.8% (5/25)
Rawmarsh West (2: Lab, ConInd) The Rawmarsh and Parkgate areas are neatly split along the A633 road, and this is the western area. Rawmarsh is generally a deprived working class area, but this ward does include some less deprived areas so its demographics are generally slightly less extreme than those of Rawmarsh East. In 2021 Labour topped the poll but there was a big gap between their two candidates' votes and this allowed the Conservatives's single candidate to take the second seat. As with Hoober the Tory councillor has left the party and this looks like a likely Labour gain.
Managerial and professional 23.1% (18/25), routine and semi-routine 33.6% (6/25), degree level 20.0% (18/25), no qualifications 25.2% (9/25), owned 59.9% (17/25), social rented 27.3% (5/25), white British 95.2% (9/25)
Rawmarsh East (2: Lab, Lab) This ward covers the eastern parts of Rawmarsh and Parkgate, including the retail park and (just about) the tram-train terminus. It is a very working class area with high deprivation. Labour won both seats here in 2021, reasonably comfortably although the single Tory candidate did respectably.
Managerial and professional 18.9% (21/25), routine and semi-routine 37.7% (3/25), degree level 16.2% (23/25), no qualifications 27.8% (5/25), owned 53.7% (20/25), social rented 27.0% (6/25), white British 92.2% (18/25)
Bramley & Ravenfield (2: Con, Con) This ward is an outlier in the Rotherham part of its new constituency demographically, geographically and electorally. It contains most of the parish of Bramley, which is an eastward extension of the Wickersley urban area; to the north the urban area extends into the parish of Ravenfield, but beyond that there is a rural area including the rest of Ravenfield and Hooton Roberts. This is one of the more middle class wards in Rotherham and elected two Conservative councillors in 2021 by a margin which suggests that they might well hold on.
Managerial and professional 33.4% (5/25), routine and semi-routine 24.8% (21/25), degree level 27.8% (5/25), no qualifications 18.7% (21/25), owned 79.6% (5/25), social rented 8.6% (23/25), white British 96.2% (3/25)

The wards in the new Rotherham constituency elected 16 Labour councillors, 3 RDP, 3 Lib Dems and an Independent in 2021. Labour has since taken one of the RDP seats in a by-election. The Lib Dems are in the south of the constituency (Brinsworth and Rother Vale); the RDP seats were in the west of Rotherham town and its northern fringe.
Keppel (3: Lab, Lab, RDPLab) Admiral Keppel was a mate of the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who had a monument, Keppel's Column, built to celebrate Keppel's acquittal at a court martial, and which is a local landmark, recently restored. The ward covers the area around the column, and includes Kimberworth Park on the fringe of Rotherham town and the villages of Thorpe Hesley and Scholes further north. Kimberworth Park, which has the majority of the electorate, is a deprived working class area, but Thorpe Hesley and Scholes and the suburban development close to the column are a bit better off. In 2021 Keppel elected two Labour councillors and one from the RDP; since then the RDP councillor resigned and Labour won the by-election.
Managerial and professional 25.0% (15/25), routine and semi-routine 31.6% (9/25), degree level 21.7% (16/25), no qualifications 21.9% (13/25), owned 64.4% (15/25), social rented 24.9% (7/25), white British 93.5% (16/25)
Greasbrough (2: Lab, RDPInd) This ward covers Wingfield and Greasbrough, which are on the northern fringe of Rotherham town and slightly semi-detached from it. Both have a lot of council estates, and Wingfield in particular is a very deprived area. This was one of the wards where the RDP won a seat in 2021, with the other seat going Labour. With the RDP disappearing Labour should be favoured to take this seat.
Managerial and professional 18.4% (22/25), routine and semi-routine 37.0% (4/25), degree level 16.4% (21/25), no qualifications 28.3% (4/25), owned 46.5% (23/25), social rented 41.4% (2/25), white British 94.2% (14/25)
Rotherham West (3: RDPInd, Lab, Lab) This ward contains areas around Masbrough and Kimberworth west of Rotherham town centre, and stretches over to the Sheffield border near Meadowhall. The west side of Rotherham town is generally yet another deprived and working class area, but not quite as much so as the east. The RDP won one seat here with a defector from Labour as their candidate; again with the disappearance of the RDP Labour would be favoured here.
Managerial and professional 19.3% (20/25), routine and semi-routine 33.4% (7/25), degree level 19.3% (20/25), no qualifications 26.8% (6/25), owned 55.2% (19/25), social rented 22.9% (10/25), white British 73.3% (23/25)
Boston Castle (3: Lab, Lab, LabInd) This ward covers Rotherham town centre, and extends southwards into the Canklow, Broom and Moorgate areas. The town centre area is deprived, as is Canklow, but some of the areas further south are not, and are quite middle class. Much of the ward (but not Canklow) has a high Asian Muslim population. The name refers to a folly in a park south of the town centre. Labour won all three seats reasonably comfortably here in 2021, though one of their councillors left the party in April 2024 and is standing as an Independent.
Managerial and professional 23.0% (19/25), routine and semi-routine 26.5% (19/25), degree level 26.6% (7/25), no qualifications 26.7% (7/25), owned 49.8% (22/25), social rented 23.9% (8/25), white British 53.6% (25/25)
Rotherham East (3: Lab, Lab, Lab) This ward covers the very deprived area of Eastwood and the slightly less deprived area of East Dene, east of Rotherham town centre. It competes with its neighbour Dalton & Thrybergh to be the most deprived ward in the whole borough. Like some of the other Rotherham town wards there is quite a high Asian Muslim population here. Labour won all three seats comfortably enough in 2021.
Managerial and professional 12.8% (25/25), routine and semi-routine 36.3% (5/25), degree level 15.4% (24/25), no qualifications 36.8% (1/25), owned 39.6% (25/25), social rented 38.6% (3/25), white British 63.4% (24/25)
Dalton & Thrybergh (2: Ind, Lab) This ward contains the areas of East Herringthorpe and Dalton (but not the parts of Dalton parish more associated with Wickersley) on the eastern edge of the Rotherham urban area, and the village of Thrybergh to the east; all of these are distinctly deprived areas, with extensive council estates, and this is one of the two most deprived wards in Rotherham. In 2021 Independent candidate Michael Sylvester topped the poll in a landslide with Labour taking the second seat.
Managerial and professional 15.2% (24/25), routine and semi-routine 38.9% (1/25), degree level 15.3% (25/25), no qualifications 32.5% (2/25), owned 44.5% (24/25), social rented 43.6% (1/25), white British 90.9% (19/25)
Brinsworth (2: Lib Dem, Lib Dem) This ward covers the parish of Brinsworth south-west of Rotherham town centre and adjoining Tinsley in Sheffield, together with an adjoining unparished area which is clearly associated with Brinsworth. Brinsworth is also quite working class but more settled, with high owner occupation and lower deprivation. The old Brinsworth & Catcliffe ward was usually Labour, but voted BNP in 2008 and elected one UKIP councillor in 2016, but in a by-election in 2017 it was won by Adam Carter, a local GP representing the Lib Dems, and in 2021, now without Catcliffe, he and his wife took both seats for the party and I would guess the Lib Dems are favourites here.
Managerial and professional 24.2% (16/25), routine and semi-routine 32.0% (8/25), degree level 19.9% (19/25), no qualifications 22.8% (11/25), owned 75.1% (6/25), social rented 10.3% (20/25), white British 90.6% (20/25)
Rother Vale (2: Lib Dem, Lab) This ward contains the villages of Treeton and Catcliffe, but is increasingly dominated by the new Waverley development, now a separate parish, an large ongoing development on reclaimed land formerly associated with the Orgreave colliery and coking works and including housing as well as the Advanced Manufacturing Park associated with the University of Sheffield. Thanks to Waverley, this is now in some respects the most middle class ward in Rotherham and it is the only ward in the whole borough with the proportion with degree level qualifications above that for England and Wales as a whole. However the newness of the housing in Waverley is reflected in very low numbers of houses owned outright and a high proportion with mortgages, and both Catcliffe and Treeton have significant amounts of council housing. The Liberal Democrats and Labour each took one seat here in 2021 and this is likely to be a contest between those two parties.
Managerial and professional 38.6% (1/25), routine and semi-routine 23.1% (24/25), degree level 35.4% (1/25), no qualifications 15.1% (25/25), owned 69.4% (10/25), social rented 15.8% (15/25), white British 86.2% (21/25)
Wickersley North (3: Lab, Lab, Lab) This ward covers the core of the Wickersley area north of Bawtry Road, and adjoining parts of Dalton parish and a small part of Bramley, both of which are part of the Wickersley urban area. Generally this is the more working class part of greater Wickersley but it is still one of the more middle class areas of the borough. Labour won all three seats here in 2021; the Conservatives under-nominated and their leading candidate was 253 votes short of a seat.
Managerial and professional 29.3% (8/25), routine and semi-routine 27.7% (16/25), degree level 25.4% (8/25), no qualifications 19.0% (20/25), owned 65.6% (12/25), social rented 13.4% (19/25), white British 95.3% (7/25)

The wards in the new Rother Valley constituency elected 16 Conservatives and 5 Labour councillors in 2021. Since then the Lib Dems and Labour have each taken one seat off the Tories in by-elections. This area should be the main battleground in this election.
Sitwell (3: Con, Con, Lab) Although in Rother Valley constituency, this ward is really the southern edge of Rotherham town. Much of it consists of the parish of Whiston, the northern part of which is part of the Rotherham urban area, and it also covers adjoining parts of the Broom, Moorgate and Herringthorpe areas of Rotherham town outside the parish. It is a relatively middle class and low deprivation area, with the highest proportion of professionals outside Rother Vale. The northern part of the ward, adjoining Boston Castle ward, shares that ward's high Asian Muslim population, but the areas further south are much whiter. It is historically the most right-wing area of the borough, but in 2021 one of the Tory candidates performed noticeably worse than the other two and Labour took the third seat, the first time they'd won a seat in the area since a "Sitwell" ward was created in 2004. This is presumably the hardest of the seats Labour won in 2021 for them to defend, though demographic trends may be less favourable to the Tories here than in some other parts of the borough.
Managerial and professional 33.8% (3/25), routine and semi-routine 22.0% (25/25), degree level 30.8% (2/25), no qualifications 17.6% (23/25), owned 81.3% (3/25), social rented 9.1% (21/25), white British 83.5% (22/25)
Thurcroft & Wickersley South (2: Con, Con) This shotgun marriage covers the southern part of Wickersley, a relatively well off area, together with the deprived mining village of Thurcroft the other side of the M18. In spite of the deprivation in Thurcroft this is overall one of the more middle class wards in Rotherham. Both seats were comfortably won by the Conservatives in 2021.
Managerial and professional 32.3% (6/25), routine and semi-routine 25.7% (20/25), degree level 26.7% (6/25), no qualifications 21.4% (16/25), owned 70.1% (8/25), social rented 15.6% (17/25), white British 94.3% (13/25)
Hellaby & Maltby West (2: Con, Lab) This ward includes the western (and better off) part of Maltby, together with the fairly small parishes of Hellaby and Hooton Levitt. Slightly surprisingly given their poor results in the neighbouring wards, Labour took the second seat here in 2021, helped by a big vote gap between the top Tory candidate and his running mate, and this would be another somewhat vulnerable Labour seat.
Managerial and professional 28.6% (10/25), routine and semi-routine 26.6% (18/25), degree level 23.6% (12/25), no qualifications 20.9% (17/25), owned 80.0% (4/25), social rented 8.9% (22/25), white British 97.0% (1/25)
Maltby East (2: Con, Con) This ward covers a large part the mining town of Maltby, including the most deprived parts of the town, and an adjoining rural area including the ruined Roche Abbey. It is the most deprived part of the borough outside Rotherham town, but somewhat astonishingly the Tories won both seats here in 2021. If Labour are recovering in the Rother Valley area, they really ought to take these seats.
Managerial and professional 16.5% (23/25), routine and semi-routine 38.0% (2/25), degree level 16.2% (22/25), no qualifications 28.9% (3/25), owned 52.6% (21/25), social rented 23.9% (8/25), white British 94.8% (11/25)
Dinnington (3: Con, Con, Con) This ward is based around the mining town of Dinnington, and also contains the Laughton Common area which for some reason is part of Thurcroft parish but is really part of the Dinnington area, together with the more rural parishes of Laughton en le Morthen, Firbeck, Letwell and Gildingwells, which don't contribute much electorate. Dinnington has a deprived core but some other parts of the ward are less deprived, and it elected three Conservatives in 2021. The Conservatives even managed to hold a seat here in a by-election in July 2023 following the disqualification of one of their councillors, which doesn't bode well for Labour's chances of winning here.
Managerial and professional 27.9% (11/25), routine and semi-routine 28.4% (14/25), degree level 23.3% (13/25), no qualifications 22.2% (12/25), owned 65.3% (13/25), social rented 15.7% (16/25), white British 94.6% (12/25)
Anston & Woodsetts (3: Con, ConInd, ConLib Dem) The core of the ward is North and South Anston, which are a southern extension of the Dinnington urban area, but mostly rather less deprived than Dinnington itself. A small part of Dinnington itself is included, and also the rural parishes of Woodsetts and Thorpe Salvin. This ward is one of the most middle class wards and least deprived wards in Rotherham and elected three Conservatives in 2021, but a few months later the Lib Dems took one of the seats in a by-election and one of the remaining Tories has left the party. I wouldn't bet against the Lib Dems here.
Managerial and professional 33.9% (2/25), routine and semi-routine 24.7% (22/25), degree level 28.5% (3/25), no qualifications 18.1% (22/25), owned 81.5% (2/25), social rented 8.1% (25/25), white British 96.9% (2/25)
Wales (2: LabInd, LabInd) This ward is close to the Sheffield and Derbyshire borders, and contains the adjoining communities of Wales and Kiveton Park, which have a mix of mining heritage and more commuter elements, and the village of Harthill. This was the only ward in the new boundaries of the Rother Valley constituency not to elect any Conservatives in 2021, with Labour's second candidate 42 ahead of the leading Tory. Edit March 2024: both of the Labour councillors here have left the party.
Managerial and professional 30.9% (7/25), routine and semi-routine 27.0% (17/25), degree level 25.4% (8/25), no qualifications 19.8% (19/25), owned 68.7% (11/25), social rented 15.5% (18/25), white British 95.3% (7/25)
Aston & Todwick (2: Con, Con) This ward contains the Aston part of Aston cum Aughton, an urban area close to the Sheffield border, and extends across the M1 to include the village of Todwick. Aston is generally the more middle class part of Aston cum Aughton, and overall this is one of the most middle class wards in the borough and elected two Conservatives in 2021, with Labour's leading candidate 120 behind the second Tory.
Managerial and professional 33.7% (4/25), routine and semi-routine 23.6% (23/25), degree level 27.9% (4/25), no qualifications 17.5% (24/25), owned 82.8% (1/25), social rented 8.2% (24/25), white British 95.4% (6/25)
Aughton & Swallownest (2: Lab, ConLab) This ward includes the Aughton and Swallownest parts of Aston cum Aughton and the parish of Ulley whose reservoir once nearly flooded much of South Yorkshire. On the other side of the Rother it includes the tiny parish which now bears the name of Orgreave, essentially just a few streets adjoining Woodhouse in Sheffield which have never been annexed by the city, but most of the area historically associated with the name Orgreave, including the colliery site, is now in Waverley, to the north. Aughton is rather more deprived than Aston, and this ward elected one Conservative and one Labour councillor in 2021, but Labour took the Conservative seat in a December 2021 by-election and should be favourites for both seats here.
Managerial and professional 27.8% (12/25), routine and semi-routine 28.1% (15/25), degree level 24.4% (11/25), no qualifications 21.5% (15/25), owned 69.5% (9/25), social rented 17.7% (14/25), white British 93.5% (16/25)

Of those Independents:
Clive Jepson in Anston & Woodsetts is a former Independent councillor for the ward.
The Independent in Greasbrough and one of those in Rotherham West are sitting councillors elected in 2021 for the Rotherham Democratic Party.
One of the Independents in Dalton & Thrybergh is Michael Bennett-Sylvester, a sitting Independent councillor.
One of the Independents in Wales is Dominic Beck, a sitting councillor elected as Labour (and at one point the party's parliamentary candidate for Rother Valley) and the other is Marnie Havard, also a sitting councillor elected as Labour.
One of the Independents in Boston Castle is Taiba Yasseen, a sitting councillor elected as Labour whose defection I wasn't previously aware of. And one of the others is allegedly called Phil Potholes, ha ha ha.

It is possible to deduce "Phil Potholes"'s real name by looking at the list of agents for Boston Castle ward. It will come as no surprise that it is not Phil.
His agent, by the way, is an Independent candidate in Sheffield formerly associated with the Yorkshire Party.

Indeed, it seems quite strange for someone who has previously been a reasonably serious candidate to do this, and when I looked at his Twitter feed yesterday (it's now been protected) he didn't come across the way I'd expect from someone standing as "Phil Potholes" (of which there was no mention). Why do so many people leave the Yorkshire Party?

Why do so many people leave the Yorkshire Party? Because they are desperate to escape from the tyranny of the ClothCap & Whippet régime, escape over the border and join the Lancashire Party instead.

If those are the worst he can find to take pics of, Rotherham's roads are in better shape than most of the country ...
