I suppose it’s also possible that my friend was mistaken and it wasn’t the Tories who requested the recount, but actually a discrepancy between the verification numbers and the count numbers. Apparently this happened with several wards.
The impression I’ve got is that Dorset Council’s elections team did not run the count at all efficiently!

Purbeck
Purbeck is a part of Dorset where the Lib Dems have enjoyed strong support in the past and they have achieved a significant comeback at this election. The Lib Dems gained the third seat needed to sweep the Lytchett Matravers and Upton Ward, albeit by a relatively modest majority. The two seat Wareham Ward was also a comfortable hold for the Liberal Democrats. Only insufficient candidates prevented a Lib Dem majority on Wareham Town Council, where they won an even half of the council with the remaining seats occupied by independents.
The absence of an independent who had come close to winning last time allowed for an easy Lib Dem victory in the previously Conservative single seat ward of South East Purbeck. The two seat ward of West Purbeck was the only split Dorset Council ward in Purbeck. The Lib Dems won the top seat, with the Tories beating them for the second seat by just 33 votes, narrowly securing their only victory on the island outside of the town of Swanage. The Conservatives did manage to hold both of the two seats for Swanage, just managing to defend a Labour challenge. Labour were only 64 votes away from securing their first Dorset Council seat outside of the Weymouth and Portland area. Labour also advanced significantly on Swanage Town Council, climbing from 2 to 4 of the town's 12 councillors. With 2 independents elected on this occasion, the Conservatives dropped from 10 to just 6 town councillors, depriving them of a majority and incidentally meaning there is now no council in Dorset with a Tory majority.
Dorset Council Scoreboard
Liberal Democrats 7 (+3) Conservatives 3 (-3)

Looking at the paper prepared for the AGM on proportional allocation of members to committees, it seems Hannah Hobbs-Chell, independent from Ferndown South, has joined the Independents for Dorset Group.

New Cabinet appointments have been announced. The Cabinet includes Green member Clare Sutton with the portfolio for children’s services, education and skills. Also "lead members", a sort of junior minister if you like introduced by the Tory administration in 2020, are being scrapped.
