Not learned (learnt?) how to use quote properly. Sharon, firstly good luck with reselection. I am sure you will be fine. Secondly, as someone who first lived in Netley, then Sarisbury Green, and subsequently often took the train from Swanwick to Southampton, why is Sholing so Tory?

Click on the "Quote" thingy (at the top right of the message). Write your response underneath.

No waterfront in Sholing I believe. t adjoins Woolston which is on the east bank of the Itchen.

Secondly, as someone who first lived in Netley, then Sarisbury Green, and subsequently often took the train from Swanwick to Southampton, why is Sholing so Tory? I don't know Southampton, but looking at the demographics, it looks like a "settled working class" type of area: well below average on "managerial and professional" and on education levels, but above average on owner occupation and not especially deprived. That sort of area has often been strong for the Tories in recent years, but it's not obviously somewhere you'd have expected them to win in 2023. I assume that the Green candidate in 2023 has never captained England at cricket.

I think you assume correctly. The retired England cricketer David Gower is a traditional Conservative.

Sholing is traditionally Tory, only going Labour in really good years, apart from 2023.

Thanks for sharing, not least for local information purposes. No major surprises but it seems the full slate matches the slightly bigger (but still inconsequential) local TUSC attempts.

For the purposes of approximating total local election votes in certain constituencies, I have allocated the wards here as follows:
Romsey & Southampton North: Bassett, Swaythling
Southampton Itchen: Bargate, Bitterne Park, Harefield, Peartree, Sholing, Thornhill, Woolston
Southampton Test: Banister & Polygon, Bevois, Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge, Shirley
There is an "interesting" division of Banister & Polygon ward between Test and Itchen constituencies - the two parts within Test only join at a crossroads.
