The Greens also came a strong second from nowhere in Church and Spring Hill wards, so it definitely looks like they've had a sudden influx of support among the Asian community. I doubt it would have made much difference whether the candidate in Central ran as a Green or Independent really. I do wonder if a different candidate might have won Spring Hill, rather than the Green who was standing for Reform a couple of years ago. The results here are terrible for the Tories. Peter Britcliffe was first elected in 1984 and has served for 37 of the 40 years since (being replaced by Sara 2018-21), never lost in the 90s.

I think the Tories haven't come out of the last constant changes and arguments over Hyndburn's administration particularly well, hence why the voters are punishing them (even establised councillors).

There has been recent drama within the Tory group as well. Britcliffe had been acting leader since December due to the leader's illness, and then on her return was sacked from the cabinet a week before the election. www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/24281506.hyndburn-political-giant-dropped-boroughs-tory-top-team/

St Oswald's ward is Oswaldtwistle isn't it. The Tories always seem to win there. I have not been there (actually I've never been to Accrington either, though I have visited the constituency) and wondered if it is generally seen as a naturally Tory town or whether it is one where Labour always underperform for some reason.

Oswaldtwistle is a mill town, not particularly Tory but I think there's a big divide between Accy/Blackburn with a significant South Asian minority and Oswaldtwistle which is much less mixed.

Still silly to piss off someone who is an asset to the local Tories.
