Lawrencia Durojaiye has been misgendered. She is a she. thought so, I thought it was weird for a bloke to be called Lawrencia. Not that it's a common name for a woman either. May have been simply a contraction of "Lawrence of Arabia"

The wife of former Stroud MP Neil Carmichael (and formerly a District Councillor herself) is called Laurence (French, and pronounced accordingly.)

That’s a pretty awful Labour result. I guess Rotherham council isn’t the most popular, but there was a large Conservative to Labour swing in previous by-elections so Labour should have got the same this time given the national picture (being up by basically the same amount as the Conservatives compared to 2021 is not a normal occurrence).

A quick google suggests - oh dear God not again - a local dispute about a new housing development...

I think it might just be Lab unpopularity in the seat. In the other by elections in Rotherham had a strong swing to Lab where they were challenging the LDs or already had a Lab councillor. I think the Independent Smith's collapse split evenly between the two main parties with the old UKIP vote remaining Conservative from 2016.

The successful Independent former Mayoral candidate Mehmood Mirza is a larger than life character in more ways than one. A former Labour Party activist, he now stands on an unambiguously socialist platform. He tends not to mention his history as a significant private landlord (through his company) in Newham. The anti-Labour vote has coalesced around Mirza, and with the Conservatives putting up a North London resident as their candidate, it’s very likely that many Conservatives voted for the avowedly left-wing socialist as a means to oppose Labour most effectively.

I saw footage of the declaration on Twitter and I was concerned that the Returning Officer referred to the Labour candidate as “John Vadžestika” even though his name is John Vjestica. I hope that the explanation is that Mr Vjestica pronounces his own name in that peculiar and illogical way (as is his prerogative, if he wishes) rather than that the R.O. was too dim to read his name properly.

This is a ward where the Conservatives could hardly muster 20% of the vote a decade ago and virtually everyone on here predicted a Lab gain. Any local explanation? I am aware that boundaries may have changed. I am looking previous figures for 'Dinnington' ward

I know that all the caveats about local elections, and especially by-elections, apply, but it cannot be encouraging for Labour to have lost three out of four seats on significant local authorities in two weeks with the Conservatives gaining two of them.

Apologies - I got Rotheram wrong. Still a poor result for Labour though.
