The principal double bass in the video of Calon Lan is playing German bow while all the rest are playing French bow.
(I bet that's mystified almost all of you with the possible exception of batman). |

I once attended a wedding near Cardiff where out of deference to the grooms English family, the English words of Calon Lân were sung. It was terrible - they are clumsy and dont scan. And nobody knows them, so everyones heads were buried in the hymn books mumbling and stumbling along. After the English verse it was switched to Welsh which was sung at full voice with ease. |

I once attended a wedding near Cardiff where out of deference to the grooms English family, the English words of Calon Lân were sung. It was terrible - they are clumsy and dont scan. And nobody knows them, so everyones heads were buried in the hymn books mumbling and stumbling along. After the English verse it was switched to Welsh which was sung at full voice with ease. Was that at the specific request / agreement of / consultation with the groom and/or his family, or was it an example of patronising presumption by the organisers? I would have been annoyed if that had happened to me. (I remember being annoyed when a choir on “Britain’s Got Talent” sand “Calon Lân” and Simon Cowell said he hadn’t heard that song before). |

(I bet that's mystified almost all of you with the possible exception of batman ). when I was a boy I knew Oliver Knussen, a composing prodigy (though a bit older) as I myself was at that time, and his father Stewart. Stewart was principal double bass player in the LSO and I asked him why he bowed differently from all the other double basses. He replied that they were all out of step with him not vice versa! |

Poor showing for the Tories, a third of what they got last year, considering all the additional candidates would on paper seem more likely to take votes off Labour.

An accurate translation would be: I dont want a life of luxury The worlds gold, or luxury pearls I ask for a happy heart An honest heart, a clean heart. It should be easy to modify these words by only a little to make them fit the tune - rather than the clumsy mess in the 'official' english version.
