I can't believe we all somehow missed this one, but Monaco elected the members of its National Council on Sunday the 5th. The centre-right UNM (Union National Monégasque), a joint list of Priorité Monaco; Horizon Monaco; and Union Monégasque led by outgoing council president Brigitte Boccone-Pagès, won all 24 seats and 89.63% of the vote against the centre-left Nouvelles Idées Pour Monaco.
At the last election the 3 parties in the UNM list were the only three standing.
The electorate increased by 349 and there were 749 fewer votes, a fall in turnout from70.35% to 57.26% which shows the number of people we are talking about here!

I had to be honest never even considered the idea that Monaco has elections, but I guess it always has, it's not an absolute monarchy, or rather principality is it

I can't find out whether it's a case of the prince actually exercising his power, or more like us where the monarch has a lot of power in theory but in practice almost never exercises it and only does so on parliament's/the prime minister's advice It is a weird place politically though - one list getting 90% of the vote testifies to that! And only 21% of the population are actually Monégasque citizens, making them only the second largest nationality in their own country! Apparently there was a constitutional change in 2002 allowing the prince to appoint a Monégasque as prime minister rather than it having to be a French citizen!

Well, there are the details I gave in my opening post? And the fact that politically the place is, well, a bit weird? Anyway I would have thought it would be noted as this is exactly the kind of electoral minutiae that people on this site are interested in!

And since then there has only been one Monegasque PM, and even then only as an interim. Apparently the current PM was formerly the prefect of French Guiana. Quite a contrast. And if you think that's weird- Monaco banned its own national language until 1976.

One can only presume he offended someone to end up with those two gigs.

As a foreign national, at least he'll be allowed in the casino. One of the few places Actually, the only place I've had a Boulevardier and a Broken English in the same evening. The latter will endear it to carlton43.
