Our elections have a hard reliance on Royal Mail. If the postal votes all disappear in the system and the weather is dodgy, you are going to get serious turnout problems. If the Ashton seat wasn't disappearing in five months' time, this might make an interesting Election Court case. Wait, what happened with the postal votes?

Wait, what happened with the postal votes? The postmen have been on strike these last two days. And have a massive backlog. I hope someone in Wigan Electoral Services tallies all the late ballot papers that show up for information.

Yes if you have seen online some of the pictures of the backlogs in sorting offices I imagine they will arrive at some point next year

Wait, what happened with the postal votes? The postmen have been on strike these last two days. I don’t know if this is a universal thing, but in Croydon we’ve always been told that the Post Office does a “sweep” of their offices in the last few hours of polling day to make sure that as many as possible of the last-minute postal votes are included. They don’t just rely on the normal pattern of daily deliveries. I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is (either) a specific legal requirement (or) a general good-will agreement that there is a proper effort to make sure that postal votes are collected properly, regardless of any strikes or delays which might otherwise be happening.

I've heard of sweeps of the sorting offices also (UKIP agent training at the 2009 conference I believe), but I believe they only happen if the council agrees to pay for it.

Has anyone got the actual numbers for the Andover result? Everyone seems to want to quote percentage terms only ( maybe understandable with a sub-10% turnout).

Does anyone have any knowledge of middleenglander? His work on the weekly results and monthly summaries is being badly missed. I think his penultimate post suggested he had "important issues" to deal with- I'm hoping he's okay.
