Liz Truss would be Merton College, Oxford's second PM. How are the 60s and 70s different?

"Losing the leadership had brought out his worst characteristics:laziness, greed and self-indulgence. By 1966 he was beginning every day with brandy at breakfast and gin throughout the morning, and while never completely drunk, he was rarely entirely sober either." 'State of Emergency' p.64, Dominic Sandbrook (2010).

I suspect he would have been jettisoned by 1970 as I’d imagine he would be a lazy opposition leader whose deficiencies would have been shown up in the position. Some of his dodgy dealings may well have also caught up with him which may have finished him off earlier than it actually did.

See my remarks on the Macleod thread on the early deaths of politicians from this generation. In this case alcohol was the cause. While alcohol abuse remained a troubling feature of Westminster life into this century my sense is that the culture of the place has improved.
As for Maudling his calmness was often laziness, and I can't imagine that he'd have been a better bet than Heath, for all his faults.
Looking back at these people, active within my political consciousness, is like viewing some Lost World full of creatures of very different characteristics to their modern counterparts, operating in an almost alien culture.
