How would the early 70s be different economically?

The main thing that this post and some others remind me of is the relatively (by today's standards) youthful mortality of politicians in the first 30 to 40 years after WW2. Many, like Macleod, were heavy smokers. The NHS has grown better at helping people manage the things that can lead to severe heart attacks. Politics isn't a healthy lifestyle and individuals need to work at counteracting the obvious problems. Macleod appears to have been pretty determined not to.
