I wonder what happened to the Green candidate here from 2010 and 2014-16? He might have some insights on this by-election

On old boundaries, the Plaid candidate was elected unopposed in 2017, 2012 and 2004. The only recent contested election was 2008 when the result was an Independent gain from Plaid: Ind 228, PC 198, Ind 77. The Independent elected then was the Plaid candidate elected in 2012, 2017 and this year. He goes again in the by-election.

I’m guessing that Helen is related to/married to Roy GALLEY, who is the sitting Conservative county councillor for Maresfield & Buxted division and district councillor for the neighbouring ward to this one (Danehill & Fletching). Ian Tysh contested this ward for the Greens in 2019 and the county division last year.

I can't say I've heard from him recently.

It's basically between Labour and the Conservatives. The Conservatives have been doing year-round work in the ward, and I don't expect any of the smaller parties to run a big campaign here.

And in case anyone was wondering and didn't already know, the TUSC candidate is Dave Nellist's wife.

Not a resignation in the conventional sense then, and I'd guess that the Lib Dems will be making hay out of this in the campaign.

rare mistake from Andrew - Binley & Willenhall was traditionally a safe Labour, not Conservative ward, and was the powerbase of Dick Crossman when the local MP.

Last week I mentioned I was in Bolney about the time of their election- indeed I was, and a lot of good it did me. I hadn't mentioned I was staying on the Friday night following at the Premier Inn Uckfield ( not particularly near the splendid little town of Uckfield, I then realised -3 or 4 miles away in some godforsaken hole adjacent to the tip- typical Premier Inn location in other words). It was only when I looked at the map provided by the inestimable Mr Teale that I think that I must have been in Maresfield ward. Nearly into Piltdown parish, so not the first time there has been a fraudulent set up in the area.

Not on this particular visit but yes I know it well.  I don't live that far away after all over the Kent border and have a lot of family (brother, son, grandchildren, great grandchildren) in various parts of Sussex. We have had family homes in all sorts of Sussex places- Wadhurst, Seaford, Eastbourne, Littlehampton, Worthing.
