Not actually that much - more lower turnout due to not coinciding with a general elction in 2019.

Labour's vote dropped by a lot less though, causing a significant swing to them overall.
IIRC they have never won this ward at a regular election, but did take a seat in a previous byelection circa 1997.

There was a boundary change in 2019 to remove the south-west campus of Lancaster University, but that hadn't been built in 1997. You can't really fault this ward for variety of countryside, given that it stretches from Cockerham to the Trough of Bowland.

You can't really fault this ward for variety of countryside, given that it stretches from Cockerham to the Trough of Bowland. Part of Lancaster University's south west campus (Graduate College) did exist in 1997, and was in Ellel. This is the part that was moved into the first incarnation of University Ward from 2003 onwards. I remember a significant number of Graduate College residents travelling down to vote in Galgate on general election day, 1 May 1997 - the numbers who repeated the trip for the Ellel by-election on 24 July (called, like this May's poll, because one of the Conservative incumbents failed to attend meetings for 6 months) were a lot smaller though! Result of the 24 July 1997 by-election: Beach, Nina (Independent) 321 Broomfield, Eileen Joan (Conservative) 261 Glaister, William Alexander (Labour) 366 committeeadmin.lancaster.gov.uk/Data/Council/19971015/Minutes/Minutes.txtThere was no Lib Dem in July 1997 because their candidate was 'unable to correct an inaccurate signature' before the close of nominations: www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/6176591.x-doesnt-mark-spot/J

I'm led to believe that Bellingham in Northumberland is the largest in England

I'm led to believe that Bellingham in Northumberland is the largest in England I lived in Wester Ross, S&L and nowhere near a boundary. On our shopping expeditions to our nearest supermarket in Dingwall, we had a 130-mile round trip and without touching the side! We were also in the largest constituency and the largest Anglican parish.

We were also in the largest constituency and the largest Anglican parish. But at no time were you anywhere near being in England. It was when I drove south to see friends and family and quickly passed through the much smaller Bellingham. When I was in banking, Bellingham was always in the Top 3 most popular branches with the longest waiting list of aspiring managers. And Worksop was near top of a list containing many names of people who had expressed an opinion that they would not accept it if offered to them. I imagine such lists are long a 'thing of the past'.

A sentence crying out for the use of "&" and strategic excision of ","s.

Can’t we find a more reliable host than Britain Elects who’s obviously too busy with the New Statesman to keep BE going?

I've been out hiking this evening, so I didn't see the preview go up. I went cycling this afternoon for the first time in over a year. Managed to get to Hawsker before I had to give up.
