Mark Badair’s party getting less votes than Reform, Yorkshire and some idiot Green must be a blow.

Not really, we know the Lib Dems didn't take the by-election seriously. Any disappointment will be more than made up for by the size of their win in Devon.

A good Labour result, but turnout was low both compared to the party’s progress in the 1992 parliament and to previous fairly competitive seats. The vacancy reasons were pretty unfavourable to the Tories. Shifting votes from the Tories to Labour isn’t as easy as moving them to the Lib Dems and the “once in a generation” Brexit prompt for already somewhat uncomfortable Labour voters is hard to unwind. Too much emotional capital has been spent in the initial decision.
The independent may have hurt Labour a bit.
The new MP will need to root himself in the local party (having been imposed to some degree). And he’ll need to spend time on building a local profile. Regrettably Labour tends to want new MPs to be active in parliament, and that is more likely to be their personal purpose than an equivalent Lib Dem by-election winner. That urge needs to be delayed for a determined build of local strength and reputation.

The poll done a few weeks ago was pretty accurate. Think it was Labour 48%, Con 28%.

Good result for Labour ultimately but it’s a small enough majority to give the Conservatives hope that it could be regained at a General Election. Doubt it would happen without a leadership change but that’s a discussion for another thread

I guess their only concern will be that Indie allowing for a repeat of Dewsbury 2010 if the tories get back on track. If he stands and saves his deposit almost entirely with Muslim votes disproportionately from a labour leaning ward that will make this seat significantly harder.

I would assume the independent got the majority of the Muslim vote in this constituency.

I would assume the independent got the majority of the Muslim vote in this constituency. He did extremely well in the boxes where you'd expect a majority Muslim population, I had the Torys on 3 percent in one box and Labour and Akbar on about 45 each. But he was pinching a few percent all over the place really.

They should celebrate this victory today but it definitely should be concerning Labour that these localist Muslim politicians seem to be gaining wherever they stand. If Akbar stood here in 2024 could it be costly for Labour? What about if Galloway stood in Dewsbury or Keighley?

Akbar's campaign messaging was about as un-Gallowayesque as could be.

I am aware of this but he seems to have done well with the Muslim community in Wakefield this time.

Surely highly unlikely he will do as well in a GE if he stands. And since nobody else has pointed it out, can I just say NIP ROFLCOPTER?

Was this Britain First’s highest share of a vote in a parliamentary constituency?

Glass houses. At least the Liberals are actual liberals tbf. The Lib Dems seem to have repudiated much of what liberalism is supposed to stand for. You're now the party of EU fanaticism, managed democracy, censorship and NIMBYism. Your revoke policy was also just downright offensive and is an affront that's difficult to forget. I say all that as someone who votes Lib Dem on the AMS constituency and for my second STV pref. I am not instinctively hostile, unlike many in either my party or Labour.

You have no idea what liberalism is and it would be better if you didn't just guess what is.
