I found the lower case w very useful to know whether it was the old election the thread or the new ramped thread.
This will confuse matters

Does Galloway throw his hat in the ring? Of course he does. Euphemism?

For Christmas, my son bought me Broken Heartlands: A Journey Through Labour’s Lost England. It’s written by FT journalist Sebastian Payne, and a portrait of Wakefield is given in chapter 4. In the chapter the author tells of his conversation with the new MP, Imran Ahmad Khan: “Within minutes [he writes on page 142], I concluded I’d never encountered a newly elected MP so enthusiastic and eager to impart their life story. Khan grew up in Wakefield. His father was a consultant doctor from Pakistan and his mother an English nurse, and he said he never felt fully at home within one community…. “Khan joined the Conservative Party as a boy, and his first campaign was helping Elizabeth Peacock in her successful bid to become the MP for … Batley and Spen ... When I asked what drives his politics, he launched into a mini soliloquy… 'If I were a stick of Blackpool rock, what would be written through the middle of me is freedom. The freedom to live, work, and worship as one wishes. There is no movement, no political party that champions the rights of the individual like the Conservative Party.' .............. [one page later, at the end of the soliloquy, Payne writes:] “It was probably the most passionately I have ever heard a Conservative speak about their political beliefs or party.” It would be fascinating to know Payne's view on the situation now! Khan can certainly give a good spiel. I can imagine it could jar with some people in the sense that he’s almost Jacob Rees-Mogg-ish in his delivery. I am disappointed. Had it not been for this I thought with his CV he could’ve been an asset in foreign or development policy matters.

Of course he does. Euphemism? Not really, Galloway being a renowned hat-wearer, not always flattereringly.

It is probably the least Galloway friendly place in the seat, that springs to mind immediately. Depends on whether it's North Ossett(ia) or South Ossett(ia).

I wonder if the Conservatives might select their former by-election candidate in Batley & Spen as he's road tested in by-elections at least?

I wonder if the Conservatives might select their former by-election candidate in Batley & Spen as he's road tested in by-elections at least? If he has half a brain cell he’d stay the fuck away. He’d not be suited to Wakefield at the best of times. Especially not trying to retain a seat vacated by a paedophile.

I suppose the Tories have got to find some sort of mug to fight this seat. They need to select a woman, preferably a local Doris Karloff type whose virtue cannot be besmirched.

If it wasn’t for these serious accusations and he continued, I was wondering if he could one day manage the rare feat of being a locally-raised candidate yet one who would potentially end up in the “MPs who turned out to be bad fits for their constituencies” thread. His obsession with foreign issues as you say, sincere or not he may be with his concerns, I would hazard to guess may not have been in line with many constituents. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in favour of raising the int’l aid budget for example. I watched the start of his maiden speech to hear his accent, and he spent a lot of time paying tribute to Creagh, I’m sure much longer than others pay tribute to their predecessors which is normally out of convention/politeness (one rare exception being McDonnell). Notably, a certain Crispin Blunt was sat right behind him, nodding all the way through (or at least until I’d had enough)

His brother went to the same school as me, although he himself went to a different local school.

How times change: last year, the Tories gained Hartlepool and snapped at Labour's heels in Batley & Spen. Now, this is likely to be a heavy loss.

I know someone has mentioned Galloway already but are there any local “colourful independents” (fruitcakes) likely to give this a whirl?
Is that chap still around who had the green ink website with the crapping birds? Norman someone?

any chance of replacing the very silly poll at the top of this with a more relevant one? Having said that, I can't imagine any other result than a Labour gain

I wonder if the Conservatives might select their former by-election candidate in Batley & Spen as he's road tested in by-elections at least? Someone who lost a contest they were widely expected to win? At least the latter won't apply this time, I suppose....
